Description

(No Model.)
B. A. GARDINER. VEHIGLE GEAR.
No. 375,148. Patented Dec. 20, 1887.
A WITNE$SES I INVENTOR 6M5? N "BY 71mm ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDXVARD ALLEN GARDINER, OF WHIGLANE, NEW JERSEY.
VEHICLE-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,148, dated December 20, 1887.
(No model.)
durable in construction.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improvement with the wheels removed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the front part of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the rear part of the same, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line to m of Fig. 2.
On the under side of the straight front axle, A, is held the downwardly-extending truss B by means of the hangers O, supported by the axle A. The outer ends of the truss B are con nectcd with each other by the strengtheningrod E. g
In the middle of the truss B, next to the axle A, is formed a recess, F, for the passage of the rod G, connecting the front part of the axle with the rear part and held on the axle by the usual king-bolt. On top of the axle A is held the bolster H, provided on each end with the usual standard, I.
The hounds J are held under the truss B, and are strengthened by the brace K,running over the axle lengthwise with the hounds J, and by the side braces, L, extending from the outer ends of the truss B to the ends of the hounds J, which are connected at their ends by the straight slide-bar N, resting under the connectingrod G. The rear axle, O, is also straight and supports a truss, P, on its under side by means of the hanger Q,' secured to the axle O. The outer ends of the truss P are connected by the strengthening-rod R. In the truss 'I is also formed a recess for the passage of the connecting-bar G. The standards S are secured directly to the top of the axle 0, while to the under side of the axle is secured, near each end, a crotch, T, extending to the connecting-rod G. From each outer end of the trussF extends a crotch'brace, U, which unites with the crotch T.
The several parts of my vehicle are made of wrought-iron and cast steel, principally of steel, and as the various parts are arranged below the axle I am enabled to place the wagon-bed from six to eight inches lower than in the former style of wagon with as large wheel, thus permitting an easier loading or unloading of the wagon, and at the. same time giving a natural or center draft and having less positive tongue movement on rough roads; also, the steady carrying of loads on the same; also, using a lighter wheel with more service with fewer, separate, and distinct parts, with greater strength and less weight, with less draft, unique, simple, practical, and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the axle provided with downwardlyprojecting hangers, of a truss held to the axle by the said hangers, and a tie-rod extending under the said truss and having its ends connected to the ends of the truss, substantially as herein shown and de-' scribed.
2. The combination, with the axle A, pro vided with the hangers O, of the truss 13, the
tie-rod E, connecting the ends of the truss toget-her, the hounds .l', passing between truss and tie-rod E, and the braces K, passing over the axle and having their ends connected to the hounds on opposite sides of the axle, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the front axle, A,
of the truss B, secured to the under side of the axle, the bar E, connecting the ends of the truss, the hounds J, secured to the underside of the truss, the bar N, connecting the rear ends of the hounds, and the braces K L, substantially as herein shown and described.
