UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOM PING CHEN, OF SAN FBANGISOO, CALIFORNIA.
\NOOD SPLITT ING AND CHOPPING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,122, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed April 5, 1887. Serial No. 233,784. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOM PING CHEN, a subject of the Emperor of China, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and '5 State of California, have invented a new and useful Wood Splitting and Chopping Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine so constructed that the blocks of '10 wood will be cut vertically into thin sheets, I and at the same time these sheets split or cut transversely into small strips or pieces, as kindling-wood, in a continuous manner.
To attain this end my invention consists in an upright frame within which vertically-reciprocating knives carrying axes operate in guides or ways upon both sides of the frame. To a main or sheet cutting blade is pivoted at right angles the transverse knives or splitting-axes, and between these axes are suspended wood-clearing arms or shovels working in an automatic manner as the knifeframes are operated. A suitable clamping and feeding device is attached to the frame of the machine for holding and feeding the block of wood to the knives and axes, all of which, together with the details of construction and operation, will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my wood chopping and splitting machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section of a part-of the machine. Fig. 3 is a plan or top View of the main 3 5 or sheet cutting blade and its frame, with outer plate removed to show portion of transversely cutting or splitting blades or axes.
The main blade or sheet-cutting knife A is beveled outwardly and bolted or screwed to 0 the plate B, within an offset or rabbet at the lower end thereof, which latter is also beveled outwardly to conform to the bevel of the knife. The chisels or axes O, which split the sheets of wood transversely into kindling- 5 wood, are pivoted to the plate B at suitablelugs, as shown, and has no lateral vibration,
while the two adjacent ones, 0, are pivoted between the lugs a a, which admits of 7 side play or vibration as the knife-plate descends. The blade of one ax is shown as socketed in Fig. 2, yet it will be evident that these axes can be formed with straight edges or without the sockets. A plate or shield, 13*, covers the upper portion of these axes and prevents splinters from entering and clogging the action thereof. These kuifeplates operate in guides of the upright frame, and are hinged, one at each side of the frame, to a cross or crank rod, D, the upper ends of which connect with the crank-pins D of the crank-wheels D upon the pulley-shaft D and are operated in a reciprocating manneiyor so that when one knifeplate is raised the opposite onewill descend, and so on alternately as the machine is operated by the belt-connection with the fixed pulley E.
The feeding and clamping mechanism consists in a movable frame, H, for vertical adjustment operated by a hand-wheel upon the screw H which raises or lowers the frame to the height or length of the block of wood to be cut. This frame carries a horizontal frame, I, moving in dovetailed ways on the top of the frame H, and is provided with a dog, J, the point of which enters the top of the block and holds it firmly against the outer lug or projection, H of the frame H. The dog is operated by a rack and pinion, k, through the medium of the hand-wheel K and the feeding of the block is accomplished by pushing the frame forward as the knife severs the block into sheets.
In order to clear away the wood or kindlings from the axes as fast as the sheets are severed and split the clearing-shovels L are employed, and these are pivoted by a rod, L*, to the plate-frame B between each set of axes. The upper end of this rod L connects with an arm, Lflwhieh latter is bent around the crossrod of. the forked or crank arm D, as shown in Fig. 2, so that as the plate-frame carrying the knives is raised these clearing-shovels will descend automatically and throw outwardly or forward the split kindling-wood away from the machine in a regular and successive manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In awood chopping and splitting machine provided with cutting blades or axes, the clearing blades or shovels, and the movable knifecarrying frame, to which they are pivotally connected, said shovels being adapted to push or clear away the severed wood from the knives or axes, in the manner specified. v
2. In a wood-chopping machine, the combinati0n,with the cutting devices, of a clamping and feeding mechanism, which consists in a vertically-adjustable clamping-frame having screw and hand wheel for operating the same,
and a horizontally-movable frame running in Ways on the clamping-frame and provided with dog, rack, and pinion, all vconstructed and arranged as specified.
. 5 In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
TOM PING CHEN. n s.]
