SELF-ATTACHING BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.375,065, dated December 20, 1887.

Be it known that I, HERBERT GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Attaching Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of buttons known as self-attaching; and it consists in providing the shank of the button with an annular recess at the free end, which shank is passed through a set of key-holeshaped openings formed in a couple of detachable plates, being then turned or slightly rotated, whereby the shank of the button becomes firmly connected to said plates.
The object of this invention is to provide a self-attaching button that may be readily attached to or removed from a garment, being simple, durable, and cheap.
The especial features of my invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims. V
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure l is a perspective of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the dotted line :0 ac of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the button-head and shank. Fig. 4 shows the outer engaging or looking plate. Fig. 5 shows the inner revolving locking'plate. Fig. 6 shows the revolving base-plate. Fig. 7 is a back face view of the plate of Fig. 6.
D indicates the buttonhead; S, the shank made fast thereto. The free end of said shank is provided with an annular recess or channel, a. (See Figs. 2 and 8.)
A represents the crown-plate or disk, to which the shank of the button is attached. Said plate has a keyhole-shaped opening, Z, through its face. (See Figs. 1 and 4.) The round portion 5 of said hole is made sufficiently large to receive freely the head of the shank S. The distance across the oblong portion 3 of the hole Z is the same as the distance through the reduced portion of the shank. The periphery of the plate A is turned over, forming an annular lip, f. (See Fig. 2.)

The plates B G are secured to the under face of the plate A by means of the flange f. (See Fig. 2.) Said plates are loosely secured to the plate A thereby and allowed to be revolvedbelow the plate A, for the purpose hereinafter specified. The under face of the plate G is provided with a series of swells or projections, a. (See Fig. 7.) Said projections are for the purpose of engagement with the thumb and finger of the operator, whereby said plate may be caused to revolve. As the plate 0 is revolved the plate B also turns with it, as its lugs e are engaged with the recesses t of the plate O. i
The parts are united and secured to a garment as follows: A hole is first made through the article to whichthe button is to be attached sufficiently large to receive the shank -S, which is then passed through the hole. The plates A, B, and O, being united, as shown in Fig. 2, are placed over the projecting end of the shank, so as to allow-the head i of the shank to pass through the portion 5 of the holes Z Z, when said shank is moved along toward the end dot the channel portion 3 of said openings Z Z,'th'us bringing the reduced portion of the shank S into said channels. Then by placing the thumb and finger against the swells or pintles a of the under plate, 0, and revolving or giving said plate a quarterturn, the plate B will be likewise revolved, thereby bringing the slotted part 3 of the open ing Z at right angles to the slotted portion 3 of the opening Z, as clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. (See also Fig. 2.) lVhen the plates are so adjusted, the reduced portion a of the shank S will be securelyjournaled in the plates A B, said parts being united. To detach the button-head and its shank, the plate B is turned back to former position by revolving the plate 0 sufliciently to cause the hole Z of the under plate to register with the hole Z of the upper plate, as shown in Fig. 1, when the shank S is to be moved along the necks 3 of said openings until the head i of the shank enters the enlarged portions 5 of said holes, when the head i of said shank may be drawn from the plates A B, the parts being detached.
It will. be observed from the foregoing that the parts are simple, durable, and cheap, making a button that can be readily attached to or removed from a garment Without the aid of any other agent or tool.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the button-head and its recessed shank, of the plate A, having the opening Z, the plate B, having a like opening and series of lugs, e, on its periphery, the plate 0, having the series of recesses t, and the plates B O, secured to the plate A by means of the flange or lipf, as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the recessed shank, the plates A B, each having a keyhole-shaped opening communicating with each other, and the plate 0, attached to the former plates, having on its outer face a series of projections, a, for revolving the plates B C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
