JOSIAH F. FRENCH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUCKSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,061. dated Deember 20, 1887.
Application filed March 8, 1887.
To all whom, it' may concern:
Be it known that I, JosIAH F. FRENCH, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bucksaws, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 represents a bucksaw embodying my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 represent side views ofthe blade thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
The bucksaw is composed of a saw-blade,
' A, having teeth a, the teeth of the said sawblade being cut in such a manner or upon such a surface that their crowns form a concave curve. By this means when the center tooth bites the article to be sawed the other teeth lying within the line of the said tooth will also bite the article to a greater depth, proportioned to the distance which they project beyond the horizontal line drawn through the center tooth. It will thus be seen that the power which is to a greater or less extent lost at the end of the inward and outward throw of the ordinary bucksawI is, by means of my Serial No. 230,157. (No model.)
invention, fully utilized. The outside edge of the saw-blade being in the form of a convex curve, as indicated, I am enabled to have the teeth lie in the desired concave line without weakening the blade.
My improved saw is provided with the sawrame B and the tightening device C, the blade being united to the frame by suitable rivets or retainingpins, D D. In the saw as thus constructed the line of strain in tightening the frame will be that represented by a line joining the rivets D D, and will therefore be very close to the teeth, and consequently holding the blade at its point of greatest strain with great rigidity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A bucksaw consisting of a frame, B, a tightening device, C, and a sawblade, A, the teeth of which lie in a concave curve and the back in a convex curve, said blade being connected with the frame by rivets or pins D, located in a line near the saw-teeth.
