Fire regulations require that mobile homes of a predetermined length and including a heating furnace must be provided with an exit both forwardly and rearwardly of the furnace which is generally installed adjacent the intermediate bath area. To provide maximum utilization of available living space, the rear exit is provided in the portion of the outer sidewall adjacent the hallway.
Although an outer wall doorway in a stationary house, which is constructed in a cold climate, is generally provided with an outwardly opening outer door and an inwardly opening inner door, the mobile home rear doorway which opens into a hallway has heretofore been provided with only an outwardly opening door because an inwardly opening door would substantially block, or be blocked by, the relatively narrow hallway. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a mobile home with a new and improved door construction for such a restricted hallway.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mobile home which has a doorway closed by both an outwardly swingable outer door and an inwardly swingable inner door, having relatively foldable door sections.
it is a further object of the present invention to provide a mobile home which has an inwardly swingable inner door interconnected foldable sections which cannot buckle or collapse when the door is in a doorwayblocking position.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A mobile home including a perimetrically extending exterior sidewall having a doorway therein, an outwardly opening outer door and an inwardly opening inner door for closing the doorway, the inner door including a first vertical panel swingably mounted on the portion of the sidewall adjacent the doorway, and hinge means swingably mounting a second panel on the first panel for travel about a vertical axis between a position in substantial prolongation with the first panel when the inner door blocks said doorway and a folded position overlying the first panel when the inner door does not block the doorway, the hinge means connecting the first and second door panels preventing the second door panel from folding outwardly relative to the first door panel when the inner door is in the closed position and the door panels are disposed in prolongation of each other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become obvious as the description thereof proceeds.
The present invention may more readily be described by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan schematic view of amobile home constructed according to the present invention, part of the roof of the mobile home being broken away to more clearly illustrate the underlying portions thereof;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary, side elevational view illustrating a portion of the mobile home sidewall which has a doorway mounting an interior door having relatively foldable sections;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary, sectional top plan view, taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2, the outer and inner doors being shown in closed position and chain lines illustrating other positions thereof;
FIG. 4 is a still further enlarged, sectional plan view of a typical hinge member for connecting the relatively foldable door sections; and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of a typical latch member for latching the doors.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION A mobile home'constructed according to the present invention is generally designated 10 and includes a floor 12 supported on ground-engaging wheels (not shown), a perimetrically extending exterior sidewall 14 supported on the floor 12, and a roof, generally designated 16 (FIG. 2), supported on the sidewall 14. Partition walls 18, 20, 21 and 22 are supported on the floor 12 for dividing the mobile home into a front living area 24, a rear sleeping room area 26, an intermediate bathing room area 28, an additional sleeping room area 30, and a hallway 32 joining the front living room area 24 and the rear sleeping room area 26. Interior doors, schematically designated l5, l7, and 19 are provided in each of the rooms as usual. The partitioning wall 22 includes offset wall portions 23 defining an area for receiving a heating furnace, schematically designated 27. Provided in the exterior sidewall 14 are the usual windows, schematically designated at 34, a front door opening 36, and a rear door casing 37 defining a rear door opening 38.
Fire regulations for mobile homes demand that door openings be provided at opposite ends of the mobile home to permit easy egress from either end thereof. For closing the front door opening 36, an outwardly opening door closure, schematically designated 36a, is provided. An inwardly swingable inner front door, schematically designated 35, is also provided to close the door opening 36.
For closing the rear door opening 38, an outer storm door 39 is mounted on the rear door casing 37 by hinge members 40 to permit the outer door 39 to swing between a position blocking the door opening, illustrated in solid lines in FIG. 1, and a non-blocking position illustrated in chain lines in FIG. 1. To assist in preventing the escape of heat through the rear door opening 38, an inner door, generally designated 42, is provided and includes a first door section or panel 44 supported on the rear door casing 37 for swinging movement about a vertical axis a by a plurality of vertically spaced hinges 43. The inner door 42 also includes a second door section or panel 46 swingably mounted on the first door section 44 for swinging movement about a vertical axis b on a continuous hinge 48. The inner and outer doors 42 and 39include knobs 49 for operating bolts 49a receivable in apertured strike plates 49b mounted on the door casing 37, as usual.
As is best illustrated in FIG. 3, the hallway defining partitioning wall 22 is sufficiently close to the adjacent exterior sidewall 14 that the passage of the inner door 42 will normally be interrupted by the partitioning wall 22 when the inner door 42 is opened and the door sections 44 and 46 remain in prolongation of each other.
If passage of the door 42 is interrupted, both the wall 22 and the door 42 may be damaged, the inner door 42 will be prevented from swinging to full open position, and the inner door 42 will prevent people from passing along the hallway 32. To prevent the edge portion 460 of the inner door 42 from engagingthe partitioning wall 22, the door section 46 is moved from a position, illustrated in solid lines (FlG. 3), in prolongation with the door section 44 to a folded or overlying position, illustrated in chain lines (FIG. 3) at 46', overlying the door section 44. The two folded door sections 44 and 46 can then be swung against the exterior wall 14 out of the way of people walking through the hallway 32. The hinge 48 joining the relatively foldable door sections 44 and 46, is a continuous hinge extending the length of the door sections and includes hinge plates 50 and 52 pivotally connected by a pivot pin 54 and secured to the edges 46b and 44b of the door section 46 and 44 respectively by screws 55. It should be noted that when the door sections 44 and 46 are in prolongation of each other, such as when the inner door 42 is in the closed position illustrated in solid lines in FIG. 3, the door section 46 cannot be swung outwardly relative to the section 42, so that, if force is externally exerted on the door in the direction of the arrow c (FIG. 3), the door 46 will not inwardly buckle or collapse and thus insures against uninvited intruders merely folding the door sections to gain access to the mobile home.
It is to be understood that the drawings and descriptive matter are in all cases to be interpreted as merely illustrative of the principles of the invention rather than as limiting the same in any way since it is contemplated that various changes may be made in various elements to achieve like results without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
