N PETERS nmwmho n her. Wnluingmn. n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SGHAU, or NEWAYGO, MICHIGAN.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,003, dated December 20, 1887.
' Application filed June 27, 1887. Serial No. 242,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SoHAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newaygo, county of Newaygo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sleigh, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object certain improvements, substantially as below described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan; Fig. 3, a section on line 1 1. in Fig. 1, also showing the beam with sectional part removed; Fig. 4, asection on line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5, lettered details from Fig. 1,
with parts in section, and showing changes;
and Fig. 6 is a section on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 5.
Referring to the lettered parts of the draw ings, B is sleigh-runner. Theknee ca is made from a bar of iron, and is rigidly attached to the runner.
The construction on both sides of the sleigh is like the side hereinshown.
The transverse beam D is loosely attached at each end to the top ofthe knee by means of a headed stud, a, Fig. 6, pendent from the beam and passed loosely through ahole in said k nee a. The stud is a little longer than the thickness of the top bar of the knee, so that the runner can play vertically, as well as being capable of other movements, below set forth, by means of certain other coacting features of construction. The brace c, Fig. 3, is pivotally attached to the transverse beam D,.and is swiveled or loosely attached to plate 2 of the runner B at t.
The brace r is jointedly attached to the transverse beam D a short distance from the end, and thence extends obliqely to the nose of the runner, where it is hinged on the roller C, Fig. 2.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a change is shown, which consistsin employinga post, F, between the stud a (shown in Fig. 3) and the foot of the brace 0; but the stud a is virtually a continuation of the post in Fig. 5. The post F in this figure passes up through the top of the knee a, and through a plate on the under side of the beam D, into a recess in said beam, where the top of the post is provided with ahead, 8, thinner than the depth of said recess. By this means the runner can play vertically, the same as in Figs. 1 and 3. By means of such a construc tion the runners are capable of the following additional movements, if necessary, according to the condition of the road, whether rough, hubby, crossed by gutters, or full of frozen ribs-viz, the runners can yield laterally, sway laterally at either end, and tilt vertically at either end, all of which obviate sudden shocks to the body and undue strain on the running gear.
In use the design is to employ two bobs, one ahead of the other in the ordinary manner, of which the rear bob or sleigh is here illustrated. A portion of these results was accomplished in an invention patented to me in the United States May 31, 1887, Serial No.- 36l,016, but by a different construction.
In Figs. 1 and 4 a sleigh-shoe is shown, a A. This shoe, as will appear in the cross-section in Fig. 4, is longitudinally and centrally channeled or grooved, as at e, on the under side. The screws or bolts, or whatever is employed to attach the shoe to the runner, have their heads embedded in said channels. This style shoe prevents to a certain degree undue sluing of the sleigh in nnlevel and slippery places.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
The combination of the runners ofa sleigh, the strap-knees rigidly attached to the runners, the cross-beam, the headed lugs pendent from the cross-beam and loosely inserted in a hole in the top bars of the knees or the specilied equivalent, and the inner braces loosely attached to the cross-bar and to the runner beneath the cross-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.

CHAS. O. KRITZER, L. H. TUBES.
