Abstract

An improved safety razor is disclosed having a body provided with a base portion and two opposed side portions. The base portion is provided with an operating slot and the base portion and the side portions define an operating cavity. Biasing means connect a longitudinal portion of the bridge member to the base portion of the body for normally biasing the bridge member and a pair of toothed members (which are pivoted adjacent the longitudinal portion on wing portions of the bridge member) from a blade loading open position toward the base portion of the body and for causing the second operating lugs on a pair of blade retaining members (which are pivoted adjacent the teeth on the toothed members on the wing portions) to move away from the first operating lugs on blade retaining members and toward the base portion of the body to secure the blade between the toothed members and the blade retaining members in a blade operating closed position. A pair of crossed levers are pivotal on each other inside the operating cavity and each has its inner end pivotally connected to a depending arm on a toothed member and its outer end extending through the operating slot in the base portion of the body. The outer ends of the crossed levers may be moved toward each other thereby causing the inner ends of the toothed members to move on the resilient body mounting lips away from the base portion of the body and the bridge member on which the inner ends of the toothed members are pivoted to move away from the base portion of the body, so that the second operating lugs on the blade retaining members move into engagement with the first operating lugs on the toothed members to cause the inner ends of such blade retaining members to move outwardly from their blade operating closed position for retaining the blade against the toothed members to their blade loading open position where the blade may be removed from the razor.

In addition, each blade edge is not protected from contact with the body portions. Further, it is not possible with such conventional safety razors to shave these body portions in any desired direction without cutting, gashing, nicking or pulling the human skin on these body portions being shaved. conventional safety razors are usually operable in a longitudinal direction and do not operate satisfactorily in a circular direction. Also conventional safety razors do not quickly open widely to permit the removal or replacement of the double-edged blade and to permit thorough rinsing and cleaning of the razor. Again, conventional safety razors are not tarnish proof and if carelessly cared for, do not return to their luster. Yet again, when the double-edge blade is inserted in the conventional safety razor, the blade is not automatically locked in position by the opening mechanism of the conventional razor and in perfect shaving position.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is the general object of this invention to avoid and overcome the foregoing and other difficulties of and objections to prior art practices by the provisionof an improved safety razor for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair on the legs and underarm portions of the human body by the circular movement of the improved safety razor on such legs and underarm portions, which improved safety razor:
a. removes such hair swiftly, gently and safely,
b. protects each blade edge of the conventional double-edged blade employed therein from contact with the legs and underarm portions,
c. shaves these body portions in any desired direction without cutting, gashing, nicking or pulling the human skin on the body portions being shaved,
d. operates preferably in a circular direction rather than the conventional longitudinal direction,
e. quickly opens widely to permit the removal or replacement of the double-edged blade, and the thorough rinsing and cleaning of the safety razor,
f. is tarnish proof and retains its original luster, and
g. automatically locks the double-edged blade in perfect shaving position by release of the opening mechanism of the improved safety razor.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The aforesaid objects of this invention, and other objects which will become apparent as the description proceeds, are achieved by providing an improved razor having a body provided with a base portion and two opposed side portions. The base portion is provided with an operating slot and the base portion and the side portions define an operating cavity.
Biasing means connect a longitudinal portion of the bridge member to the base portion of the body for normally biasing the bridge member and a pair of toothed members (which are pivoted adjacent the longitudinal portion on wing portions of the bridge members) from a blade loading open position toward the base portion of the body and for causing the second operating lugs on a pair of blade retaining members (which are pivoted adjacent the teeth on the toothed members on the wing portions) to move away from the first operating lugs on blade retaining members and toward the base portion of the body to secure the blade between the toothed members and the blade retaining members in a blade operating closed position.

The outer ends of the crossed levers are movable toward each other against the action of the biasing means to move the inner ends of the crossed levers toward each other thereby causing the inner ends of the toothed members to move on the resilient body mounting lips away from the base portion of the body and the bridge member on which the inner ends of the toothed members are pivoted to move away from the base portion of the body, so that the second operating lugs on the blade retaining members move into engagement with the first operating lugs'on the toothed members to cause the inner ends of such blade retaining members to move outwardly from their blade operating closed position for retaining the blade against the toothed members to their blade loading open position where the blade may be removed from the razor.

Although the principles of this invention are broadly applicable to safety razors, this invention is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with an improved safety razor which is operable in a generally circular direction and hence it has been so illustrated and will be so described.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION With specific reference to the form of this invention illustrated in the drawings, and referring particularly to FIGS. 1,2 an improved safety razor for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair from the human body, particularly the legs and underarms and the like is indicated generally by the reference numeral 10.
This razor l utilizes a conventional double-edged blade 12 (FIG. 3) having opposed longitudinal outer cutting edges 14 (FIG. 3).
Said razor has a body 16 (FIGS. l-7) provided with a base portion 18 (FIGS. 1-2, 6,7) and two opposed side portions 20 (FIGS. 1-4,6and 7) projecting from the base portion 18. As shown, particularly in FIGS. 6,7 each side portion 20 tapers inwardly toward the vertical axis of the body 16 and then flares outwardly to terminate in a resilient body mounting lip 22 (FIGS. 6,7). Said body 16 is formed of stainless steel or the like and plated with a luster proof, corrosion resistant coating (not shown) such as varnish, wax or the like. This base portion 18 is provided with an operating slot 24 (FIGS. 1, 6,7) to permit the operation of the razor 10, as hereinafter explained. As shown in FIGS. 2, 6, and 7 the base portion 18 and side portions 20 define an operating cavity 26. It will be understood that the above described tapered arcuate shape of the side portions 20 (FIGS. 6,7) provide facile gripping of the razor 10 when such razor 10 is either in the blade operating closed position shown in FIGS. 1, 3, 5, and 6 or in the blade loading open position as shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 7. For the purpose of closing the ends of the operating cavity 26, end covers 21 (FIG; 1) fit over the end portions of the base portion 18 and side portions 20 and are secured to the side portions 20 of the body 16 by protuberances (FIGS. 1,2,6 and 7) on the end covers 28 engaging mating and registering dimples '32 (FIGS. 6,7) on the end portions of the side portions 20 of the body 16. Obviously the position of the protuberances 30 and dimples 32 may be reversed.
A bridge member 34 (FIGS. 2,4,5,6,7) is disposed adjacent the side portions 20 and has a longitudinal portion 36 (FIGS. 2, 4-7 extending longitudinally with respect to the operating cavity 26, a first pair of wing portions 38 (FIGS. 2,3,4) each extending transversely from one end (left hand end as viewed in FIG. 2) of the longitudinal portion 36 toward an an adjacent resilient body mounting lip 22, and a second pair of wing portions 40 (FIGS. 2,3,4,6,7) each extending transversely from the other end (right hand end as viewed in FIG. 2) of the longitudinal portion 36 toward an adjacent body mounting lip 22.
The generally I-I-shaped bridge member 34 (FIG. 2) is suitably formed of stainless steel of the like and fabricated in two generally U-shaped pieces each comprising one-half of the longitudinal portion 36 and two opposed first wing portions 38 and second wing portion 40. The one half portions of the bridge member 34 are secured together as by rivets 42 or the like (FIGS. 2,4,5). As shown in FIG. 2, the longitudinal portion 36 has end cutouts 44 (FIG. 2) to provide a blade locating ridge 46(FIG. 2) adapted to receive a central locating slot (not shown) in most conventional double-edged blades 12.
Each first wing portion 38 and second wing portion 40 is provided with an inner pivot hole 48 (FIGS. 1,2,4) and another mounting hole 50 (FIGS. 2,3,4) for use as hereinafter explained to mount therein a pair of toothed members 52 (FIGS. 2,3,4,5,6,7) and a pair of blade retaining members 54 (FIGS. 1,2,3,47) respectively.
Each of the. toothed members 52 is provided with a projecting pivot pin 56 (FIGS. 1,2,4) projecting outwardly into an adjacent inner pivot hole 48 in the bridge member 34 so that each toothed member 52 is pivotal on opposed wing portions 38, 40 and extends outwardly toward an adjacent resilient mounting lip 22 on side portion 20 of the body 16.
Each toothed member 52 has a mounting lip 58 (FIGS. 6,7 engagable as by crimping or the like, on an adjacent resilient body mounting lip 22 and a plurality of teeth 60 (FIGS. 1,2,3,4,5,) extending beyond hard mounting lip 58 for cooperation with an adjacent cutting edge 14 of the blade 12 to remove the hair from the human body. Although the figures show only 14 teeth per side, for convenience of illustration, it is desirable to provide in the order of 24 to 28, most preferably 26, teeth 60 per side for the safest and most comfortable shaves.
In order to provide means to actuate the razor blade 10 each toothed member 52 has an operating arm 62 (FIGS. 5-7) depending therefrom into the operating cavity 26 of the body 16.
For the purpose of providing blade locating means cooperable with corner locating holes 63 (FIG. 3) for the conventional double-edge blade 12, each toothed member 52 has a pair of spaced locating pins 64 (FIGS. 2,3,4,5,6,7) projecting therefrom.
The structure employed to actuate the blade retaining members 54 is for example, a first operating lug 66 (FIGS. 2,3,4) on each end of the teeth 60 on the toothed member 52. The same tarnish proof material is employed for the toothed members 52 and blade retaining members 54. As shown, particularly in FIG. 2, clearnace slots 68 are provided adjacent the first operating lugs 66 in each toothed member 52.
In order to permit pivotal movement of each blade retaining member'54 on opposed wing portions 38 and 40, a pin 70 (FIGS. 2-7) extends through each hole 50 in the wing portions 38,40 and a hold in a leg 72 in each inner end of a body 74 (FIGS. 2-4, 6 and 7) of each blade retaining member 54.
This body 74 is provided with clearance slots 76 (FIGS. 2,3) for the locating pins 64 on each toothed member 52 when the razor 10 is in the blade operating closed position of FIGS. 1, 3, 5, and 7.
For the purpose of providing stop means on each blade retaining member 54 when it engages the blade 10 (adjacentthe cutouts 44 adjacent the blade locating ridge 46 on the longitudinal portion 36 of bridge member 34) in the blade operating closed position of FIGS. 1, 3, 5 and 7, spaced stops 78 (FIGS. 2,4,7) project at right angles from the inner portion of the blade retaining member 54 as viewed in the closed blade operating position of the razor 10 (FIGS. 1,3,5,7).
Each blade retaining member 54 has a second operating lug 80 (FIGS. l,2, 3,6,7) projecting from each adjacent leg 72 of the body 74 of the blade retaining member 54 for cooperative operation with an adjacent first operating leg 66 on an adjacent toothed member 52.
Biasing means 82 (FIGS. 4,5,6,7) connect the longitudinal portion 36 of the bridge member 34 to the base portion 18 of the body 16 for normally biasing the bridge member 34 and the toothed members 52 from a blade loading open position (FIGS. 2,4,7) toward the base portion 18 of the body 16 and for causing the second operating lugs 80 on the blade retaining members 54'to move away from the first operating lugs 66 on the blade retaining members 54 and towardthe base portion 18 of the body 16 to secure the blade between the toothed members 52 and the blade retaining members 54 in the blade operating closed position (FIGS. 1,3,S,6).
As shown in FIGS. 4-7, the biasing means 82 has a pair of springs 84 (FIGS. 4,5,6,7) extending at one end through holes 86 (FIGS. 4-7) in longitudinal portion 36 of the bridge member 34, and through holes 88 (FIG. 5) in studs 90 (FIGS. 5-7) or the like. The studs 90 are provided with jeweled heads 92 or the like (FIGS. 1, 5-7) for decorative purposes and extend through suitable holes 94 (FIG. 5) in the base portion 18 of the body 16.
Crossed levers 96 (FIGS. 6 and 7) are pivoted on a pin 98 extending through the levers 96, have their inner ends connected by a pin 100 to the free end of the operating arms 62 for the toothed members52, and have their outer ends terminating in handles 102. The levers 96 move from the normal blade operating closed position (FIG. 6) in the operating slot 24 in the bottom portion 18 of the body 16 to the blade open loading position of FIG. 7.
It will be recognized by those skilled in the art that the objects of this invention have been achieved by providing an improved safety razor for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair on the legs and underarm portions of the human body by its circular movement thereon, which improved safety razor 10 (FIGS. 1-7) removes such hair swiftly, gently, and safely; protects each blade edge of the conventional double-edged blade 12 employed therein from contact with the legs and underarm portions; shaves these body portions in any desired direction without cutting, gashing, nicking, or pulling the human skin on the body portions being shaved; operates preferably in a circular direction rather than the conventional longitudinal direction; quickly opens widely to permit the removal or replacement of the double-edged blade 12 (FIGS. 2,4-7) and the thorough rinsing and cleaning of the safety razor 10; is tarnish proof and retains its original luster; and automatically locks the double-edged blade l2 in perfect shaving position (FIGS. 1,3,5,6) by release of the opening mechanism (i.e. levers 96) of the imporved safety razor 10.
While in accordance with the patent statutes preferred and alternative embodiments of this invention have been illustrated and described in detail, it is to be particularly understood that the invention is not limited thereto or thereby.
What is claimed is:
I. An improved safety razor utilizing a double-edged razor blade having opposed longitudinal outer cutting edges and for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair from the human body, said razor having:
a. a body provided with a base portion and two opposed side portions projecting from said base portions,
1. said base portion being provided with an operating slot,
2. said base portions and said side portions defining an operating cavity, and
3. each of said side portions having on its free end a resilient body mounting lip,
b. a bridge member disposed adjacent said side pora pair of toothed members, each pivotally adjacent said longitudinal portion of said bridge member on an opposed first wing member and a second wing member and extending transversely toward an adjacent sideportion of said body,.
1. each of said toothed members having,
a. a mounting lip engageable with an adjacent resilient body mounting lip on said side portion of said body,
b. a plurality of teeth on said mounting lip and extending beyond said mounting lip for cooperation with a longitudinal cutting edge of said blade to remove said hair from said human body,
c. an arm depending from said toothed member into said operating cavity,
d. a first operating lug adjacent one end of said teeth,
. a pair of blade retaining members each pivotally mounted on the outer portions of an opposed first wing member and a second wing member, and having a second operating lug disposed adjacent a first operating lug of said toothed member,
f.- biasing means connecting said longitudinal portion a pair of crossed levers pivotal on each other inside said operating cavity and each having:
1. its inner end pivotally connected to an adjacent arm of a toothed member, and
2. its outer end extending through said operating slot in said base portion of said body;
h. said outer ends of said crossed levers being movable toward each other against the action of said biasing means to move said inner ends of said crossed levers toward each other thereby causing the inner ends of said toothed members to move on said resilient body mounting lips away from said base portion of said body and said bridge member on which said inner ends of said toothed members are pivoted to move away from said base portion of said body, so that said second operating lugs on said blade retaining members move into engagement with said first operating lugs on said toothed members to cause the inner ends of such blade retaining members to move outwardly from their blade operating closed position for retaining said blade against said toothed members to their blade loading open position where said blade may be removed from said razor.
2. The safety razor recited in claim 1 wherein said side portions each taper inwardly and then arcuately outwardly to provide a facile gripping surface.
3. The safety razor recited in claim 1 wherein said bridge member is formed of two generally U-shaped portions secured together by the bases of said U-shaped portions.
4. The safety razor recited in claim 1 wherein said longitudinal portion is adapted to provide a blade locating ridge.
5. The safety razor recited in claim 1 wherein one of said toothed members has a blade locating pin.
6. The safety razor recited in claim 5 wherein one of said blade retaining members is provided with a clearance slot for said blade locating pin.
7. The safety razor recited in claim 1 wherein one of said blade retaining members has a stop for engagement with said blade when said razor is in the blade operating closed position.
8. The razor recited in claim 1 wherein said biasing means is a spring.
9. The razor recited in claim 1 wherein one of said levers has a handle on its outer end.
10. An improved safety razor utilizing a razor blade having a longitudinal outer cutting edge and for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair from the human body, said razor having:
a. a body provided with a base portion and two opposed side portions projecting from said base portion, I 1. said base portion being provided with an operating slot,
2. said base portion and said side portions defining an operating cavity, and
3. one of said side portions having on its free end a body mounting lip,
b. a bridge member disposed adjacent said side portions and having a longitudinal portion extending longitudinally with respect to said operating cavity, a first wing portion extending transversely from one end of said longitudinal portion toward said adjacent resilient body mounting lip, and a second wing portion extending transversely from the other end of said longitudinal portion toward said adjacent body mounting lip,
. a toothed member pivotally adjacent said longitudinal portion of said bridge member on an opposed first wing member and a second wing member and extending transversely toward an adjacent side portion of said body,
1. said toothed member having,
a. a mounting lip engageable with said adjacent resilient body mounting lip on said side portion of said body,
b. a plurality of teeth on said mounting lip and extending beyond said mounting lip for cooperation with said longitudinal cutting edge of said blade to remove said hair from said human body,
c. an arm depending from said toothed member into said operating cavity,
(1. a first operating lug adjacent one end of said teeth,
e. a blade retaining member pivotally mounted on the outer portions of said opposed first wing member and said second wing member, and having a second operating lug disposed adjacent a first operating lug of said toothed member,
. biasing means connecting said longitudinal portion of said bridge member to said base portion of said body for normally biasing said bridge member and said toothed member from a blade loading open position toward said base portion of said body and for causing said second operating lug on said blade retaining member to move away from said first operating lug on said blade retaining member and toward said base portion of said body to secure said blade between said toothed member and said blade retaining member in a blade operating closed position,
g. a pair of crossed levers pivotal on each other inside said operating cavity and one of said levers having: 1. its inner end pivotally connected to said adjacent arm of said toothed member, and 2. its outer end extending through said operating slot in said base portion of said body;
h. said outer ends of said crossedlevers being movable toward each other against the action of said biasing means to move said inner end of said one crossed levers toward said other crossed lever thereby causing the inner end of said toothed member to move on said body mounting lip away from said base portion of said body and said bridge member on which said inner end of said toothed member is pivoted to move away from said base portion of said body, so that said second operating lug on said blade retaining member moves into engagement with said first operating lug on said toothed member to cause the inner ends of such blade retaining member to move outwardly from its blade operating closed position for retaining said blade against said toothed member to its blade loading open position where said blade may be re moved from said razor.
11. The safety razor recited in claim 10 wherein one of said side portions tapers inwardly and then arcuately outwardly to provide a facile gripping surface.
12. The safety razor recited in claim 10 wherein said bridge member is formed of two generally U-shaped portions secured together by the bases of said U-shaped portions.
13. The safety razor recited in claim 10 wherein said longitudinal portion is adapted to provide a blade locating ridge.
14. The safety razor recited in claim 10 wherein said toothed member has a blade locating pin.
15. The safety razor recited in claim 14 wherein said blade retaining member is provided with a clearance slot for said blade locating pin.

1. An improved safety razor utilizing a double-edged razor blade having opposed longitudinal outer cutting edges and for the removal of unsightly and unwanted hair from the human body, said razor having: a. a body provided with a base portion and two opposed side portions projecting from said base portions, 1. said base portion being provided with an operating slot, 2. said base portions and said side portions defining an operating cavity, and 3. each of said side portions having on its free end a resilient body mounting lip, b. a bridge member disposed adjacent said side portions and having a longitudinal portion extending longitudinally with respect to said operating cavity, a first pair of wing portions each extending transversely from one end of said longitudinal portion toward said adjacent resilient body mounting lip, and a second pair of wing portions each extending transversely from the other end of said longitudinal portion toward said adjacent body mounting lip, c. a pair of toothed members, each pivotally adjacent said longitudinal portion of said bridge member on an opposed first wing member and a second wing member and extending transversely toward an adjacent side portion of said body, 1. each of said toothed members having, a. A mounting lip engageable with an adjacent resilient body mounting lip on said side portion of said body, b. a plurality of teeth on said mounting lip and extending beyond said mounting lip for cooperation with a longitudinal cutting edge of said blade to remove said hair from said human body, c. an arm depending from said toothed member into said operating cavity, d. a first operating lug adjacent one end of said teeth, e. a pair of blade retaining members each pivotally mounted on the outer portions of an opposed first wing member and a second wing member, and having a second operating lug disposed adjacent a first operating lug of said toothed member, f. biasing means connecting said longitudinal portion of said bridge member to said base portion of said body for normally biasing said bridge member and said toothed members from a blade loading open position toward said base portion of said body and for causing said second operating lugs on said blade retaining members to move away from said first operating lugs on said blade retaining members and toward said base portion of said body to secure said blade between said toothed members and said blade retaining members in a blade operating closed position, g. a pair of crossed levers pivotal on each other inside said operating cavity and each having: 1. its inner end pivotally connected to an adjacent arm of a toothed member, and 2. its outer end extending through said operating slot in said base portion of said body; h. said outer ends of said crossed levers being movable toward each other against the action of said biasing means to move said inner ends of said crossed levers toward each other thereby causing the inner ends of said toothed members to move on said resilient body mounting lips away from said base portion of said body and said bridge member on which said inner ends of said toothed members are pivoted to move away from said base portion of said body, so that said second operating lugs on said blade retaining members move into engagement with said first operating lugs on said toothed members to cause the inner ends of such blade retaining members to move outwardly from their blade operating closed position for retaining said blade against said toothed members to their blade loading open position where said blade may be removed from said razor.

An improved safety razor comprising a razor blade having two outer cutting edges for the removal of unsightly or unwanted hair from the human body utilizing a razor body of substantially rectangular configuration including a base and two opposed side portions, said side portions tapering inwardly from said base portion and then extending arcuately outwardly to provide a facile gripping surface for operating said safety razor; said base portions cooperating with said side portion to releasably secure said razor blade in an arcuate configuration whereby the cutting edges of said blade face away from the body of the razor; said base having a substantially flat outer surface which contacts said skin during the operation of said razor, and said base and said body cooperating to retain said blade in said arcuate configuration, wherein said arcuate configuration is concave relative to said flat contact surface; said body including a series of teeth on said side adjacent said base, and each cutting edge of said blade extending intermediate the plane of said flat surface and the outer edge of said teeth.
20. The razor of claim 18 wherein means are mounted on the top of said razor to releasably secure said base in said blade retaining position.
