.of Chicago, in the'county of Cook and State of- Illinois, have invented certain new and f useful Improvements in Safet Razors; and
I do 'hereby declare the fo owing to be a full, clea'r, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and and especially to improvements in razors of A the Auto-strop type.
'The auto-strop type of safety razor is provided lwith a com ed guard carrying an upstanding lug on each side, and two rotative shafts are journaled at each end in said `lugs, said shafts vcarrying intermeshing gears.` A clamping plate, of rigidly resilient.material is non-rotatively mounted on the top shaft and the blade is forced between said clamps and held in shavin position by the inherent resiliencyA of the p ates. Two blade-holding lates, B and C :are mounted upon-the sha 13. The plate Bis provided with collars 20, 21, each of which surrounds the shaft 13, and is secured thereto, adjacent the inner face of one of the lugs y11 and 12, whereby any rotation of the shaft 13 will swing the plate B. The plate C is provided with an elongated collar 22 which loosely 'surrounds the shaft 13, whereby the plate is rotatable around the shaft. kAs shown in Fig. 3, a coiled spring 23 surrounds that portion of the shaft 13 between the collars 20 and 22, sa1d spring exerting a tendency to retain the collar 22 in contact with the collar 21. It will be obvious however that the plate C is not only rotatable about the shaft 13, but is slidable longitudinally thereon against the tension of the spring 23.
The plate C is centrally provided with an integrally-formed locking detent 24, which is struck from the metal composlng the plate, said detent extending outwardly from the plate and being provided with a backwardly curved tongue 24. At the left of the detent 24 is formed an aperture 25, prt vided with a straight Wall adjacent the detent 24, and. on the other sideof the detent 24, is provided a similarly shaped aperture 26,`with a straight wall remote from ,sa1d detent.
The plate B is centrally provided with an aperture '27, having a straight wall on the left. On the left side of said aperture 1s formed a detent 28, which is struck from the metal of the plate and is provided with a lip directed towards the aperture 27. An eX- actly similar detent 29 is provided on the other side of the aperture 2 it being noted that the lip is turned away from the aperture 27.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, the portion 9 of the guard 7 is centrally provided with an aperture 30, of the exact size and configuratlon as the aperture 27 in the plate B, and adapted when the plate B is laid flat on said portion 9.
" With the instrumentalitles provided as described, when the razor blade A is to be inserted between the4 plates B and C, the
blade is laid onto the plate B so that the detents 28 and 29 pass through the apertures 18 and 19 respectively, and the blade is then moved to the left so that the detents overlie the body portion of the blade. The plate C isthen swung around the shaft 13 towards the plate B, and, since the blade has been moved to the left, the tongue 24 will pass through the aperture 17 in the blade, but will contact the body portion of the plate B, adjacent and at the left of the aperture 27 therein. Also the body rtions of the plate C, adjacent and at the eft of the apertures 25 and 26, will also contact the detents 28 and 29, on ,the plate B, and in view of these facts the plate C. in this position, cannot for registration therewith v interlock with the blade and plate B. But, simultaneously with the rotation of the plate C around the shaft 13, the operator presses upon the plate C and pulls it to the right, against the compression of the spring 23. This operation changes the position of the plate C, and periits the passage of the detents 28 and 29 through the apertures 25 and 26 respectively, which are then in registration with said detents, and causesthe tonguel 24 to pass into registrationwith the aperture 27 and permits it to pass therethrough. In this position the lateral pull of the plate C to the right is released, and the spring 23 restores it toits normalpostion, whereupon the detents 28 and 29 engage that surface of the plate C, remote from the plate B, and the tongue 24 engages that surface of the plate B, remote from the plate C, the blade eing securelylocked between the plates, and retained in that position by the spring 23.
The above is the vstroppin positlon of the razor, and it will be obv1ous that the strop may be passed beneath the shaft 14,
Fig. 2, and that the stropping operation may be carried out in the usual manner.
To secure the blade A in shaving position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the assembled plates and blade are laid down onto the portion 9 of the guard 7, but the tongue 24 will strike that portion of the guard 9 to the left Manifestly a reverse movement of the platel C will permit unlocking of the plates and blade from the guard, or will permit ready disassembly of the blade and the plates B and C, and since it is not necessary to touch the blade A, during the locking or unlocking operations, such manipulations are not accompanied b any danger of injury to the operator. oreover, all the arts of the device are completely disassembled when the blade lA is removed, and are therefore easily cleaned and dried, preventing the formation of rust. The cleaning ,between the clamping plates of the ordinary Auto-Stro structure is not possible. It is also to' e noted that the tongue 24 and the detents 28 and 29 all engage the straight walls de lining the apertures 25, 26, 27 and 30, and hence any rotative movement ofthe blade A is impossible.
Modifications Vor the herein disclosed in the art, but my invention covers all such embodiments as fall fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A safety razor including two shafts geared together, and two blade-holding plates mounted on one of said shafts, one
of said plates being rotatable With respect geared together, and two blade-holding plates mounted on one of said shafts,vone
of said plates being rotatable with respectl to said shaft, and movable longitudinally v thereof, and means for resiliently resisting such longitudinal movement of said plate.
4. A safety razor including two shafts geared together, and two lblade-holding plates mounted on one of said shafts, one of said plates being rotatable with respect to said shaft, and movable longitudinally thereof, and means for resiliently resisting such longitudinal movement of said plate, said means comprising a coiled spring surrounding said shaft and positioned in the path of such movement.
5. Blade-holding means for safety razors comprising a rotative shaft, a plate mounted for movement around and longitudinally of said shaft and provided. with a detent adapted for extension through an aperture in a blade, a second plate fixed on said shaft and provided with means co-operating with said detent to retain said blade between said plates, a guard, and means carried by said guard co-operating with said detent to secure the plates and blade to the guard when said first mentioned plate is moved in onel direction longitudinally of said shaft.
6. A safety razor including a rota-tive shaft, a plate rigidly secured to said shaft and rovided with two detents extending there rom and with an aperture, -another plate loosely mounted on said shaft and capable of rotative and longitudinal movement with lrespect thereto, said loosely mounted plate being provided with two apertures and a detent so positioned-as to be brought into registration, respectively, with the detents and the aperture on the rigid plate when the loosely mounted late is shi combination with a blade a ertured to 'receive the detents on both p ates when the loosely mounted plate is shifted longitudinallyr of the said shaft.
7. A safety razor including a rotative shaft, a plate rigidly lsecured to saidshaft and provided with two detents extending therefrom and with an aperture another plate loosely mounted on said shaft and ca pable of rotative and longitudinal movement with respect thereto, said loosely mounted plate being provided with twoapertures and a detent so positioned as to be brought into registration, respectively, with the detents and the aperture on the rigid plate when the loosely mounted late is shifted longitudinally of said sha in combination with a blade apertured to reted longitudinally of said sha in ceive the detents on both plates when the f loosely mounted plate is shifted longitudinally ofY the said shaft, and with means tending at all times to restore said loosely mounted plate to normal position on said y shaft.
8. A safety razor including a rotative shaft, a plate rigidly secured to said shaft and rovided with two detents extcndin there rom and with `an aperture, a guar rovided with an aperture, another plate' oosely' mounted on said shaft and capable of rotative and longitudinal movement with respect thereto, said loosely mounted plate being provided with two apertures and a detentso positioned as to be'brought into registration respectivelyf'with the detents and the aperture on the rigid plate and with the aperture in said guard, when the loosely mounted plate is shifted longitudinally of said shaft, in combination with a 'blade apertured to receive the detents on both plates when the loosely mounted plate is shifted longitudinally of the said shaft.
