UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. LEE SAFELY AND WILLIAM J UDSON WILLIAMS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,851, dated December 1-3, 1887.
Application filed January 15, 1887. Serial No. 224,433. (No model.)
State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Change-Making Fare-Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part .thereof, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sect-ion of our improved change-makingfare-box. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3is a plan view, of a portion of the change-box, showing the position of the slides therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a fare-box in which a bill or coin maybe placed and the change delivered without the necessity of the handling of the money by the changemaker.
Our invention consists in a fare-box containing the usual aperture for receiving coins and having the usual receptacle for fares, in combination with a change-making device and a receptacle for bills or larger coin for which change is required. l
The fare-box A is provided with adrawer, B, in the lower portion, which drawer is divided into compartments a b by the partition 0. The lower part of the upper portion of the fare-box is divided into two compartments, (2 e, by the glass partitionf. In the rear ofthe box is formed an aperture, 9, provided with a mouth-piece, h, and below the aperture 9, inside of the box A, is placed a chute, i, which delivers the coin requiring no change to the spout j.
In the compartment 6 is placed a valve, 0, which turns on pivots 7c and is provided with a downwardly-projecting arm,-l, to which is pivoted a rod, m, extending through the front 0f-the box A and having a knob, n, by which the valve may be tilted. The valve is provided with a counter-weight, It", for returning it to the point of starting. A coin inserted in the aperture 9 is delivered by the chute 13 and spout j to the valve 0, where it is inspected through the window 0, after which it is delivered to the compartment 1) by tilting the valve by means of the rod m and knob n.
, rod m, and knob 11.
Above the compartment d is supported a change-receptacle, D, having series of circular chambers 19 pp, adapted to receive coins of different diameters. A series of slides, q g, 850., each having an aperture, 1*, corresponding with the chamber above it, are arranged to slide in guides beneath the chamber and above a table, 8. In the table 3, in front of the series of chambers p p p, are formed holes 75, corresponding in size with the holes in the slides q g, &c.' The rear end of each slide is provided with an upwardly-turned arm, a,
which is engaged by a spring, a, secured to the back of the change-receptacle D. To the front end of each slide is secured a rod, E, which projects through the front of the box A and is provided with a knob, F. The knobs F are marked to correspond with the coins in the chambers behind them, so that when a knob is pulled a coin will be withdrawn from the chamber corresponding in value to the mark on the knob. v s
In the lower part of the compartment d is placed a tilting Valve, 0, which is similar to the valve 0 in the chamber a, the valve being provided with pivots k and with an arm, Z, Above the valve 0 and in the rear of the box Ais formed an opening,
w, through which the bills or coins larger than the required fare are introduced into the compartment cl and deposited on the valve 0. The money is viewed through the window 0 and glass partition f, or through the window 0 in the upper part of the box. The money upon the valve is then deposited in the compartment a by pulling the knob a and tilting the valve. When the valve resumes its horizontal position, the knobsF corresponding to the change required are pulled out, thus drawing out the slides, each slide carrying from the corresponding chambera coin having the value indicated on the knob. The coins'thus withdrawn from the chambers fall through the apertures t of the table 8 upon the valve 0, from which they may be taken by the person to whom the change belongs.
The thickness of. the slides is regulated according to the number of coins to be with drawn from the receptacle with a single motion of the slide. If, for example, two coins are to be drawn out at once, the slide will be IOC of a thickness corresponding with the combined thickness of the coins.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a change-making fare-box, the combi nation, with a casing provided with the opening w, the windows 0, and the transparent partition f, of the valve 0, the change-receptacle D, provided with a series of coin-chambers, apertured slides below the chambers, and the apertured table 8, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a change-making fare-box, the combination, with a casing having the opening 10, the transparent partition j, and the window 0, of the valve G,the change-receptacle D, provided with apertured slides below the said chambers, the apertured table 8, the rods m E, and the springs 'v, substantially as shown and described.
