UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN PERSCH, OF NEW` YORK, N. Y.
KNITTED UNDER-GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374.494, dated December 6, 1887.
Application tiled August 19, 1857. Serial No. 247,329. (No specimens.)
elastic fabric which will stretch sufiiciently to i To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN PERscH, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ribbed Knitted Under-Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to shirts and drawers of ribbed elastic fabric formed by knitting. These under-garments are formed ordinarily of ribbed knitted fabric, the shape of which is secured by the great lateral elasticity of the material. Thus the undershirt is made ot' straight iiat fabric united into straight tubu lar form in body and sleeves. The sleeves are, when in their normal condition, narrow and of uniform size throughout, and t the arm ofthe wearer' by their lateral elasticity. This elasticity, which is necessary in all other parts of the garment, is detrimental in the cuffs, since it -leaves the cuffs too large and loose.
To remedy this is the obiect of my invention, which consists of a cut't' or end formed continuously with the sleeve orleg of a ribbed knitted under-garment of a less elastic material than the body.
:fit the body of the wearer. The sleeves are of the same material, and, though only straight narrow tubes when in their normal condition, will stretch enough to adapt them to the arms and fit snugly in every part except the ends where they stretch toc much. The ends, there- `fore, of the sleeves are formed, as shown at a, ot' a less elastic material, which is knitted continuousl y with the other part of the sleeve, but Y of a different thread.
The same construction is applicable in the same way to drawers made of the same longitudinal ribbed fabric, the extremities o f the limbs in both cases being formed of a continuw onsly-knitted fabric, but closely tting and less elastic.
I claim- An undergarment made of elastic ribbed knitted fabric constructed in the body and limbs of the garment to t the person of the wearer by reason of its elastic quality, the terminal portions of the limbs of the garment being formed of less elastic material knitted continuously with the limbs, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing witnesses.
JOHN PERSCH.
