An object is to provide such a board which is adapted to receive puzzles of various sizes and shapes.
Another object is to provide a puzzle board which is convenient to use and is foldable for storage or packagmg.
Various other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully set forth.
A feature of the invention is a board having a size to receive the largest puzzle of a series and having channels around its periphery in which inserts may be placed. The inserts have their outer edges shaped to conform to the channels in the board and their inner edges shaped to conform to a definite size and shape of puzzle. The inserts are varied and replaced in accordance with the particular puzzle being assembled.
The nature of the invention will be better understood from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which a specific embodiment has been set forth for purposes of illustration.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of ajpuzzle board embodying the invention, showing the board in partially folded condition and with an insert partly infplace;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the board when extended for use and with the inserts in place;
FIG. 3 is a partial section taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2 showing the construction of the channels;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of an insert, on a reduced scale,
suited for assembling a puzzle having a circular contour; and
FIG. 5 is a similar plan view of an insert suitable for use with a puzzle having an octagonal contour.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the board is shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 as comprising a board formed in two parts 10a and 10b and hinged as by a fabric strip 11 for folding. Each of the parts 10a and 10b is formed with an end channel strip 12 and-side channel strips 13, which together are shaped to receive an insert 15. Each insert has outer side edges l6shaped to slide in the side channels 13 and an end portion adapted to seat in the end channel strip 12. The inserts 15 are readily slidable into the channels when the board is in partly folded condition as shown in FIG. 1. The inner edges of the inserts 15 are shaped to conform to the contour of the particular puzzle which is to be assembled. The two inserts 15 together form a rectangular outline to receive a rectangular puzzle as indicated in FIG. 2. It is to be understood of course that each of the inserts 15 may be made in two or more parts which together form the desired outline. Also, additional inserts may be placed within the confines of the inserts 15 so as to accommodate puzzles of other contours. For example, triangular inserts in the respective corners could adapt the board to receive a puzzle having an octagonal outline.
FIG. 4 shows an insert 18 having a semicircular inner edge. A pair of such inserts in the respective parts of the board provide a circular opening for receiving a puzzle of comparable shape.
FIG. 5 illustrates an insert 19 adapted to receive a puzzle having an octagonal contour. OBviously other inserts could be provided for use with puzzles having any desired size or contour and the various inserts may consist of one or more parts which may be grouped as required to build up various outlines.
The puzzle board above described is convenient for handling or moving a partially completed puzzle without disturbing the positions of the pieces which have been assembled.
What is claimed is: v
l. A. puzzle board for assembling jig-saw puzzles comprising a board on which the puzzle pieces may be placed, channel members disposed around the ends and sides of said board and a plurality of inserts having outer edges adapted to fit in said channels and having inner edges configured to provide variously shaped openings conforming in contours to the contours of the puzzles to be assembled.
2. A puzzle board as set forth in claim 1 in which said board is formed in two parts and hinge means is provided for permitting said parts to be folded together about the hinge line for storage or for the insertion of said inserts.
3. A puzzle board as set forth in claim 2 in which said inserts are each formed in two parts adapted to be inserted in the channels of the respective board parts and together forming the outline of the puzzle contour.
4. A puzzle board as set forth in claim 3 in which said side channel members are divided at the hinge line for the insertion of the insert parts when the board is partly folded about said hinge line.
