PAIENIEB M26 I973 INVEN'fOR. WALFRIDO R. LOPEZ 4 in J ATTORNEY DOUBLE LOADED SPEAR GUN CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION This invention is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 879,766, filed Nov. 25, 1969, now abandoned, by the same inventor, Walfrido R. Lopez, titled DOU- BLE LOADED SPEAR GUN.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to underwater equipment and more particularly to a double loading spear gun. This invention has been designed to provide the scuba diver or underwater fisherman with a spear gun capable of propelling two spears independently and with a simultaneous double loading system.
The advantage of having a double shot in a weapon of this kind is recognizable in that in the act of underwater hunting the speared fish may still try to escape capture and a second shot may be needed to complete the hunt. Further, if the first shot missed the target completely a second shot will be needed to spear the fish.
The simultaneous double loading system gives the scuba diver the convenience of loading two spears at the same time with a minimum effort of his arms and legs, resulting in a more enjoyable sport.
Its also an object of the present invention to give the scuba diver a spear gun light in weight and soundness in its operation which are factors extremely important in underwater hunting.
Another object of this invention is to provide for a spear gun that is solid, simple in construction easy to fabricate and modest in cost.
Other objects and many additional advantages will be more readily understood by those skilled in the art after a detailed consideration of the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings.

FIG. 8 is a rear view partly in section of one element of the invention of FIG. 7;
FIG. 9 is a sectional view of the element of FIG. 8 taken along line 9-9;
FIG. 10 is a detail view of still another element of the invention; and
FIG. 11 is a sectional view-taken along line 11-11 of FIG. 10.
The spear gun shown in the drawing includes a docking head member 22 extending transversally of the spear gun. having upper and lower disposed through holes 26 to guide spears 28, and a running board 23 having a forwardly extending portion 8.
The docking head member 22 has two cavities 27 extending inwardly from its rear side for receiving and connecting two elongated cylindrical tubes 25.
'The running board member 23 also extends transversally of the spear gun having in its upperportion two symmetrical holes 14 with slightly different internal diameters from the external diameters of the tubes 25, 23 adapted to embrace said tubes 25 allowing the running board 23 to slide over said cylindrical tubes 25.
The running board 23 has attached at its rear side four pairs of resilient elements 11 with two pairs of upper socket portions 33 and two pairs of lower socket portions 32. Each socket is adapted to receive plugs at the ends of the resilient members 11 which in turn are screwed to the sockets 33 and 32. The members 11 are adapted to propel the two spears 28, That is two pairs of member 11 is adapted to propel one spear.
The resilient members 11 engage the spears 28 by means of U-shaped wires 12 which attach to notches 21 of the spears 28, shown in FIG. 6.
The forwardly extending portion 8 of the running board 23 includes a pair of hooks 9 which are pivotal about a pin 30 and which are urged radially outwardly by a spring 10. The hook 9 of the forwardly extending portion 8 operates within the hole 7 of the docking head member 22 for engagement of the docking head 22 with the running board 23. That is the member 8 is centered and directed to pass through hole 7 of the docking head member 22. Then the hooks 9 pivot radially inwardly to a closed position for passing into the hole 7 and pivot radially outwardly for locking the running board 23 to the docking head 22.
The running board member 23 has in its central part, a U-shaped opening 31 extended downwardly to avoid friction between the spear and the running board. The running board 32 having laterally axial divergently and downwardly extended stirrups 13.
A pistol member 35 has in its upper portion two longitudinally disposed sockets 29 to receive end parts of the cylindrical tubes 25, and spear sockets 20 shown in FIG. 6 extending inwardly from its front edge for receiving the rear ends of the spears 28.
A trigger mechanism 24 is composed of two triggers 15 pivotally mounted in the pistol member 35. The trigger mechanism 24 having two retracting pins 18 upwardly projected, with angle shape terminals extending perpendicularly into the spear sockets 20 and been urged in an upwardly direction by springs 17.
It is apparent that by inserting the rear end of the spears 28 into the spear sockets 20, the butt of the spear striking the angle shape terminals will cause the pins 18 to slide downwardly. The springs 17 will cause the pins 18 to slide upwardly into the holes 19 of each spear 28 locking the spears 28 in a loaded position.
The trigger mechanism 24 have members 16 to transfer the backwardly trigger movement into a downwardly retracting pin movement to release the spear for firing.
The ends of the two elongated cylindrical tubes 25 are inserted, into the two cavities 27 of the docking head member 22 and into the sockets 29 of the upper part of the pistol member 35, serving at the same time to align the running board 23. The cylindrical tubes 25 may be held to the docking head member 22 and the pistol member 35 by a tight frictional fit or by other 3 suitable mean, to seal the tubes, for the purpose of creating an air chamber in the cylindrical tubes, giving floatability and reducing the weight of the spear gun while underwater. The two spears 28 are disposed parallel to said tubes 25 in an upper and lower position.
in another embodiment, shown in FIGS. 7 to 11, the spear gun utilizes the pistol member 35 and docking head member 22, as in the first embodiment of this invention but supports a different type of running board 50. The running board 50 includes rollers 52 which permit the running board 50 to move longitudinally along tubes 54 sustantially with no friction in the loading and the firing operation of'the spears 28. The running board 50 also includes a pair of pivotal members 56 which can be used in their extended position, shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, for the loading operation of the spears. The pivotal members 56 are retracted as shown by arrows 58, to a closed position, shown in phantom 60, when the scuba diver wishes to travel through the water.
As shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 the resilient elements 11 are connected toa circular member 62 which contact the spears 28, at a reduced neck area 64, when the spear gun is loaded. The circular member 62 also is used in propelling the spear through the gun when the spear is fired.
The purpose of this spear gun is to shoot the spears underwater at a reasonable distance and with sufficient force to penetrate through, and hook substantially most types of fishes.
In its operation the spears 28 are inserted through the holes 26'of the docking head members 22 of the spear gun and into spear sockets 20. The butt of the spear striking the angle shaped terminals of the pin 18 for retraction of the pin and locking the spears in a loaded position within the pistol member 35.
The elongation of the resilient members 11 the U shaped wires 12 are inserted within notches 21 of the spears 28. The scuba diver then places both his feet against the running board 23 and while holding the spear gun with his hands presses against the running board which will slide or roll along the tubes 25 or 54 until the running board 23 engages the docking head 22. The forwardly extending portion 8 of the running board would pass through the hole 7 of the docking head 22 for engagement therewith by the hooks 9.
By pullingback on one trigger 15 one pin 18 will release one spear and the stressed resilient member will propell the spear through the spear gun towards its target.
While the present invention has been described in preferred embodiments, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications can be made therein within the scope of the invention.
