Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BLACK- FoRD, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casket-Handles; and I declare the following to be, a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in casket-handles, and has for its object to provide a handle-bar having a novel and inexpensive covering consisting of a fabric wound spirally around said bar and with the adjacent edges of said fabric hidden by an additional fabric spirally Wound over said edges, as hereinafter described and claimed. y

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a casket with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2is a portion of the handle-bar, showing how the fabric is wound around the same.

In the drawings, A represents a casket; B, brackets to engage ahandle-bar, C, to the casket. The brackets can be hinged or otherwise fastened to said casket.

As casket-handles have been heretofore made of metal, there was great liability to tarnisll by exposure, and it has been the custom among undertakers to carefully protectthem from the action of the atmosphere until required for exhibition or use. They had then to be attached to the casket, requiring considerable skill, labor, and time.

Gasket handle-barshave also been provided with tubular textile coverings and with coverings of textile material rolled into the bar and secured thereto in various ways; but, so far as I am aware, a casket handle-bar has not hitherto been provided with a spirally-w0und covering.

The object of my invention is to provide at little expense a handle-bar that can be attached at the factory and always ready for inspection or use, and at the same time present a very neat appearance. I accomplish this result as follows: Around the handle-bar C, I wind a strip of cloth, d, or any suitable fabric, preferably in a spiral manner, and terminating at the ends of the bar in any desired way. Over this fabric is wound an additional fabric, b', designed to cover the intersections where the adjacent edges of the said 'fabric d meet, hiding them frornview and presenting to the eye a more finished appearance. that this manner of covering a handle-bar will It is obvious result in a considerable reduction in the cost of 6o handle-bars, besides making it possible to employ any color of material that will best conform to that used on the casket.

Vhat I claim as my invention is- A casket handle-bar provided with a covering consisting of a fabric spirally wound around said bar, the adjacent edges of said fabric being hidden by an additional fabric spirally wound over said edges, substantially as described.
