in a novel forrn of eoupling so devised that it couples automatically and oan be uncoupled withont passing between the ears.
It consists, second, in a noVel arrangement whereby an extra li nk is carried in the conp ling.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car-body with my iniproved conplin g attaohed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of two conplings in position to loe conpled. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken throngh Fig. 2, with the conpling in coupled position. Fig. 4 ist a plan view of my coupling when conpled.

Additional bea1pings, G G, in the nature of lugs 01 shonlders, are providedwhich serve a donble function of steadying the catohes and holding the link permanently on one end, as shown in Fig. 3, so that it cannot be lost.
H H are lugs, whieh assist in holding the link in place and close against bloeks H on the base of the draw-head.
K K are ears on the ooupler-hook, eonneoted to a rod or ehain, M, running to the top of the car, for lifting the couplixig-hooks without going between the cars.
These couplers are N N are shoulde'rs on the conpling-hooks for limiting the thr0w of the hooks, so that the link L cannot be removed from the coupling, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
L is an extra link slid into its back position around the blooks H, so as to be ont of the way when not nsed.
Eaoh coupling has one link, thns making one extra link when the ears are coupled.
The operation is so obvious as to need no further explanation, it being olear that on forcing two cars together the projecting link will force its opposing hook up and allow it to drop into position.
The\veight of the jaws is snfficient to tilt the link np on a line, and to thns present it always in a position ready for automatio insertion.
The links L L are put in place before the coupling-hooks D D are inserted and the pins E E fixed in platze, after which they cannot be removed withont taking the ooupler to pieces.
N is a ooupling-lever of bellcrak shape, journaled to the end of the oar, and having handles P P, adapted to operate the eoupler from the side of the oar through the ageney of a chain-eonnection, as shown.
I am aware that antomatiooar-oouplers are old, and that devices have been arranged to couple and uncouple the cars from the side and top of the car withont neoessitating an entranoe between the oars. Ido not claim such feature.
I am not aware that anydevioe has been coustructed for retaining the links so that they cannot loe lost; nor do I know it to be old to devise means to hold the link horizontal while the cars are in unconpled position, nor to provide an extra link carried in the conpler.
It will be seen that with my device I provide against the loss of linksan itern 0f no small matter in railway matters. I also provide a cheap, simple, and durable coupler adapted to couple automatically any cars of ordinary heights if provicled with sirnilar couplers.
