UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATHEW DILL, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,355, dated January 12,1886.
Application filed November 7, 1885. Serial No. 182,138.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATHEW DILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of two couplings connected together the positions of the coupling-hooks before engagement being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of one coupling provided with a special link engaging with a pin-andsocket coupling as ordinarily used. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the coupling-socket, one of l which is attached to each end of each car by any suitable arrangement of draw-bar and springs; o it may be bolted to the car.
Each socket A is provided with a vertical hole, a, and a vertical slot, to. A portion of the top of the socket is cut away at one end of the hole a, leaving the bar a of suitable form for the coupling-hook to catch over.
Horizontal holes a are formed in the socket on each side of the vertical slot a, and short vertical slots a are formed at one end of the holes a, so that the pivots of the couplinghook may be inserted into the said holes.
B is the coupling-hook, provided with pivots b, trip 11, and stop I).
O is a cover-plate, pivoted to the top of the socket by the pin 0, and provided with a slot, 0, in which the coupling-hook works.
When the cars are approaching each other, the coupling-hooks stand, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l, with the stops 1)" resting upon the top of the cover-plates. When the cars meet, the trip 12 of each hook strikes against the end of the socket on the opposite car, and each hook falls and catches over the bar a of the-opposite socket.
(No model.)
In order to uncouple the cars, they must be pushed together. The hooks can then be raised, using the trip'b for handles.
The cover-plate keeps each hook or link from coming out of the horizontal holes in the socket.
WVben it is desired to couple a car provided with a socket, A, to another car having a common pin-and-socket coupling, such as D, a special link, E, is used. The link E is open at one end, and is provided with a pivot, e, and a hook, e. The coupling-hook B is re moved from the socket by turning the coverplate on its pivot until the pivots b can'pass out of the holes a through the slots a". The link E is then inserted in its place. The hook e of link E engages with the bar a when the pivot e is placed in the end of the hole a, and the looped portion of the link can then be coupled to the pin of the coupling D in the ordinary manner. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a car coupling, the combination of a socket in the top of the draw-head, a removable coupling hook or link having lateral bearings and pivoted in the said socket, and a cover-plate pivoted to the top of the drawhead over said-socket and retaining the said hook or link within it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the socket A, provided with the holes a and a the slots a and a and the bar a a coupling hook or link pivoted in the said socket, and
a cover-plate pivoted to the top of the said socket and retaining the said hook or link within it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination of the socket A, provided with the holes a and a the slots a and a, and the bar a the couplinghook B, provided with the pivots b, the trip b, and the stop b", and the cover-plate 0, provided with the pivot-pin c and slot 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof 'I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MATHEW DILL.
