IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-ELEVATORS.
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. E. STURDY, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebee and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Water-Elevating Device tor Wells and Oisterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line :v x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l. Fig. 3 a detached perspective view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improved waterelevating device of that class designed for household use, andin which a bucket and windlass are employed.
The invention consists in providing the bucket with a swinging spout and valve, arranged in such a manner that the spout will be tilted as the bucket is elevated and the valve raised, so as to admit of the water escaping from the bucket and through the spout into the pail or receptable prepared to receive it, the spout assuming a vertical position as the bucket descends, so as not to interfere in the least with the filling of the bucket when the latter reaches the water.
The invention also consists in the application of acam and guide to the bucket arranged in such a manner that the bucket and spout will, when they reach the termination of their upward movement, be in a proper relative position with the hole in the well-curb, so that the spout may pass into said hole to discharge the vwater from the side of the curb.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to described it.
A represents a well-curb, which may be of rectangular form, and of any suitable dimensions, and B is a shaft, which is placed in the upper part of the curb, and has a pulley, C, upon it and a crank at one end. The curb A is placed over the well, as usual, and it has a hole, a, made in one side of it.
D is a bucket, which has a rope, E, attached to it, the rope passing over the pulley C, and
H is a bent lever, the fulcrum c of which is in a pendent bar, d, attached to the side of the bucket at its lower part. The inner end of this lever H projects underneath the pin b, and the outer end is connected by a cord or chain, c", to a spout, I, which is connected by pivots d d to the lower ends of two inclined arms,
-J J, the latter being attached to the bucket D.
The spout I is allowed to swing freely on the pivots d d', which are near the center of the spout, and the back part of the latter is rather heavier than the front part, so that when the spout is free it will assume a vertical position, its front end being uppermost, as shown in red in Fig. l. To the under side of the spout I there is attached a curved rod, e, which is bent in such a manner as to project out from the spout acertain distance, as shownin Fig. l. To the inner side of the curb A, just below the hole a, there is secured a hook-shaped rod, f, the use of which will be presently shown.
K K are two vertical guide-rods which, are secured within the curb A, at two opposite sides thereof, and L is a bar which is fitted on these rods and allowed to work freely up and down thereon. The rope E of the bucket D passes through the bar L. On the upper edge of the bucket D there is secured a bar, M, which has a cam, N, attached to it, at about its center. This cam, N, is formed of a vertical tube having its upper end cut obliquely, as shown clearly at g in Fig. 3. Adjoining the cam N, at its lower end, there are two parallel lips, h h, between which, when the bucket reaches the termination of its upward movement, the lower end of a pendent plate, O, passes, said plate being attached to the bar L.
The operation is as follows: As the bucket D is lowered into the water the spout I assumes a vertical position, and when the bucket enters the water the'valve Gr opens, and the bucket is consequently lled. When the bucket is elevated by turning the shaft B, the valve G closes and the water is thereby retained in the bucket. As the bucket rises the barL serves as a guide for the same, and when said bar L reaches the termination of its upward movement, the bucket, being still elevated, is turned in such a position that its spout l will be in line with the hole a in thecurb A, in consequence of the upper oblique surface of the cam being brought in contact with the lower edge of the plate O, and the lower edge ot' said plate enters between the lips h h. Just previous to the termination of the upward movement of the bucket D, the projecting rod e comes in contact with the rod f, attached to the curb A, and the spout I is thereby tilted, its outer end passing through the hole a ot the curb. By the tilting of the spout I, the lever H is actua-ted in consequence of the latter being connected to the former by the chain or cord 0X. Theinnerendof leverH is thrown upward by the letting down of the spout I, and the pin b is thereby made to raisev the valve G so that the water may escape from the bucket. Vhen the bucket is lowered, the spout I assumes a vertical position in consequence of the back part of the same being nearer than the front part, as previously stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The attaching of the spout I to the bucket l), substantially as shown,in combination With a lever, H, and valve G, all arranged in the manner shown, so that said spout may be tilted at the proper time, and the valve raised in order to admit of the Water being discharged from the bucket, as described.
2. The cam N and lips h h, attached to the bucket D, in combination with the pendent tplate O, attached to the risingand-fallin g bar L, arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
