Description

` 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEMAN A. ASHLEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WM. RIDENOUR ANDI\IAHLON K. BISER, SAME PLACE.
l-IVIPROVEMENT IN HAY AND COTTON PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,370, dated January 6, 1863.
To all whom t may concern:
" Be it known that I, HEMAN A. ASHLEY, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Iml provement in Hay and Cotton Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'fuli, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates, rst, to a provision whereby the operations of advancing and retracting the piston or pistons may be accomplished by a continuons and nearly uniform movement of the team; second, to a provision for enabling both doors of the .press to be simultaneouslylthrown open for tying.
Figure l is a perspective view of my windlass. Fig. 2 is a top view of both windlass and press. Fig. 3 isa longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is atransverse section through the windlass.
A is a frame, having two similar boxes, B B', for receiving and con ining the article to be compressed. C are solid ends to said boxes.
D is the feed-door.
EE E are the doors which are thrown open for the purposes of tying and liberating the Y compressed bale.
F F are two hooks, hinged to the frame at f and f, respectively, and to each other by a joint, j'.
A is aneXtension of the frame, and carries avertical drvingfshaft, G, having a spurwheel, H, which is made to mesh into one or other pinion I or I of windlass J or J by means of a lever, K, according to whether it is desired to apply the powerto pressing or A. The toggle N is hinged at its extremities to pistons O O". By the above-described arrangement of mechanism a great and gradually-accumulative pressing-power is obtained. The windlass J connects by cord L directly with the pistons O and OQ enabling said windlass to act with a uniform and rapid motion to retract said pistons. It will be seen that the two windlasses wind always in the same direc* tion, but never at the same time, and that the winding up of either acts to unwind the other by simply drawing on its cord. The pressing being completed, a sharp blow or kick by the operator upon the hinge f of the duplex hooi; F F acts to release both of the side doors at once.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The arrangement of windlasses J-J, lever K, pinions I I', spur-wheel H, and cords L L, attached or connected. respectively, to the toggle M N and directly to the pistons in the manner and for the objects stated, when co1nbined with hooks F F, hinged to each other and to the frame, and adapted to open and close both doors E E at once, in the manner set forth.
Intestimony of which invention I hereunto y set my hand.
HEMAN A. ASHLEY. Vitnesses:
I. S. CrrRrsTIn, E. GRoss'LAND.`
