BEADON R. LYDDON, OF SYOAMORE, ILLINOIS.
LAND-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,984-, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed October 7, 1886. Serial No. 215,634. (No model.)
.To LZ/ whom it may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, BEADON R. LYDDON, a
4citizen of the United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Land-Rollers, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a land-roller embodying my invention; Fig. 2, atransverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line m :v of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a' rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 a detail elevation of one of the segments detached.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to land-rollers, and has for its object to produce a land-roller which shall be simple and strong in its construction', and which shall effectually level the ground and crush the clods; and to these en ds my invention consists in certain novel features, which I shall now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the main frame, which is rectangular in form, consisting of transverse members a and longitudinal members a', these latter being curved or arched, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, to pass over the wheel-segments. v
B represents the tongue, and G the driverseat, which are attached to the frame A in any suitable manner. nAt each end of the main frame there is secured, to the und'er side thereof, a yoke or bracket, D, and in these yokes or brackets is mounted a fixed axle, E, each yoke being provided with a hub portion, d, through which the said axle passes. The axle E is additionally supported at its center by means of a yoke or bracket, D', secured to the main frame A, and having a suitable hub,
d', through which the said axle passes. Upon the axle E is mounted a series of wheel-segments, F, each consisting of a hub, f, mounted on the axle, Vspokesf, and a rim or tire, f2, of considerable thickness and of a width equal to the width of the hub f. Each wheel-segment is provided upon its outer periphery with a series of circumferential ribs or projections, f3, preferably V-shaped in cross-section, as shown. In the present instance I have other, only sufficient space or play being left between them to prevent binding.
G represents a bar pivoted to the rear of the frame Aand provided with a series of scrapers, H, equal in number to the number of Wheelsegments employed-being twelve in the present instance. Each scraper H is provided with a series of notches, h, equal in number and conforming in shape to the ribsf3 on the Wheel-segments F.
G represents a lever attached to the bar G and extending upward, so as to be within oonvenient reach of the occupant of the seat C.
The operation of my improved land-roller will be readily understood from the preceding description. When drawn across the surface ofthe soil, the wheel-segments will revolve and, by means of their circumferentially -ribbed peripheries, will effectually` crush the clods and pulverize the soil, thereby preparing the same for the reception of crops. The wheelsegments, being capable of independent revolution, will permit the entire device to be turned in a verysmall space, and consequently to be operated in corners and elsewhere with great convenience. If the soil adheres to the rollers in too great quantities and clogs the same, it may be readily removed by means of Lthe Scrapers H, which are operated in an ob- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a land-roller, the combination, with the main frame A, the brackets D, having IOO hubs d, and the bracket D', having hub d, of cntidl ribs, f3, of the bar G, pivoted to thc the fixed axle E, mounted in said hubs and main frame and provided with lever G', anda extending from one side of the machine to the series of separate Scrapers, H, independently I5 other, and the independent Wheel-segments F, attached to said bar, and each provided with 5 mounted looselyon said axle and having hubs a series of notches, h, corresponding to the f and rims f2, of equal width, connected by I circumferential ribs'7 substantially as and for spokcsf, each segment being provided with the purposes specified. :L series of circumferential ribs, f 3,sl1bstan BEADON R. LYDDON. tially as and for the purposes specied.
lo 2. In a land-roller, the combination, with Titnessesz the independently-revoluble Wheel-segments EDWARD CURTIS, F, each provided with a series of circumfer H. M. KNIGHTS.
