IMPROVEME NT IN SOD-CUTTER AND COTTON-CHOPPER.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sod-cutter, pulverizer, and cotton chopper, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line war, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a section of the cutters.

A represents a rectangular frame, of any suitable dimensions, provided at the front end with a clevis, B, and has handles 0 O, suitably connected to it.

a is a shaft, having its bearings in the side pieces of the frame A, and upon this shaft are secured two disks, D D, which are connected by means of cross-bars b I), set into the edges of said disks at suitable distances apart, thus forming a skeleton wheel or roller to receive the cutters.

G G represent cutters, each made of one piece, in annular form, fitting around the circle formed by the cross-bars b, and provided with side flanges or cars, to be fastened by nails or screws or bolts through said flanges to the cross-bars 12. Of this class of cutters there are two, three, ormore on each side, while in the center are sectional cutters, each of which is formed of two large segments, G,

and two smaller segments, G each provided with lugs or flanges, to be fastened to the cross-bars in the same manner.

The larger segments G are intended to be used at all times, while the smaller segments are to be used or not, according to the nature of the work.

When the segments G are put on they fill the spaces between the segments G, and these cutters are then, so to say, continuous, the same as the cutters G. The machine is then to be used for sod-cutting, pulverizing ground, and similar work.

When the segments G are removed, two spaces are left on opposite sides of thewheel, as shown at I, and the machine is then to be used for thinning out cotton.

The weight of the machine presses the cutters into the ground, and cuts up the cotton, except where the holes or spaces I come on the ground, and here the cotton is left stand- All the cutters can easily be removed, when required, for sharpening or other purposes, and attached again.

On the rear cross-bar of the frame A is secured a slotted plate, J, through which the cutters pass for being cleaned of any dirt adhering to them.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the frame A, with clevis B and handles 0 O, the rotating wheel a D b, the circular cutters G, and the sectional cutters G G all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
