Be it known that I, WILLIAM STANLESE, J r., a Citizen of the United States,residing in Great Barrington, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamo Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the construction of the armatures employed in electric generators, and its object is to provide an armature-core which shall be free from Foucault currents and consequent heating, and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured.
The invention consists in forming an armature-core in substantially the following manner: Upon a suitable shaft there is mounted a cast-iron frame consisting of two end plates or disks connected by bars of approximately the length of the armature. One of the end plates is constructed With a liange extending outward to the periphery of the armature. lhese plates are of soft iron having a diameter equal to th at of the tlange, and they each have a central opening. They are placed upon the frame side by side, and bound firmly in position by another plate of cast-iron which is secured upon the Shaft. The soft-iron plates are preferably insulated or magnetically Separated from each other by sheets of insulating material-as, for instance, paper.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in vvhich Figure l is a longituclinal section of the core, and Fig. 2 is a ,5 crosssection.
Iteferring to the tigures, A represents the shaft of the armature, and B the cast-iron frame. Phis consists of two end plates, CL' ct, united by rods b b, four of which are shown in the 40 drawings. The plate c is constructed with 'a tlange, ct, which extends outward to the periphery of the completed armature. Upon this frame there are placed plates c 0, of soft iron, having openings of such size as to fit L1,5 snngly upon the frame. The plates are preferably separated from each other by thin Sheets D D, of paper or other suitable nonmagnetic material. llhe plates are bound in position by the plate D, which is preferaloly screwed upon the Shaft A and rests against so the end of the series of plates and the end plate, CL, of the frame. A nut, D', may be applied to the Shaft independently of the plate D, 01' the two parts may be constructed together. The frame itself is keyed to the Shaft, as shown at 63, or fastened in any suitable manner.
The plates c 0 may, if desired, loe made With lugs or projections upon their circurnference, and it is not desired to limit the invention to any special outline of plates.
I claim as nay invention- 1. The combination, with the shaft Of the armature of an electric machine, of an armature-core consisting of a frame of cast-iron independent of lout carried upon said shaft, plates of soft iro11 upon the frame, Sheets of non-conducting material between said plates, and a castiron end piece binding the plates in position. y
2. In an armatnre-core, the combination of the frame consisting of end plates, rods or bars uniting the same, one of which plates is widened, plates of soft iron mounted upon said frame, and a bindingplate applied to the end of the frame opposite said wiclened plate.
8. In an armature-core, the combination of a frame of cast-iron, consisting of the end plates, CL' t, the connecting-bars 1) b, plates of soft iron placed upon the frame, the bindingplate D, and the shaft upon which the binding-plate is screwed.

The combination, with the armature shaft of an electric machine, of an armature-core consisting of a frameinclependent of the shaft, but carried thereby, and consisting of end plates and longitudinal bars nniting the Same, leaving an annular Open space about the shaft, and insulated soft-iron plates upon the frame.
