Karl Bell Alt0rneyI-Iolman & Stern 1 1 ABSTRACT A device for launching a ship from a slip comprising a hydrofoil mounted on a launching slide under the stern part of the ship and rigidly connected thereto through a system of rods.
The hydrofoil is mounted in such a way that its chord is parallel to the diametral plane of the ship while its nose is arranged in the direction of movement of the ship during its launching.
This hydrofoil develops a hydrodynamical lifting force which supports the stern part of the ship during the launching, thus reducing the reaction forces at the threshold of the slip.

SHEET 1 BF 2 PATENTEDAFR I 71973 SHEET 2 [IF 2 DEVICE FOR LAUNCHING SHIP FROM A SLIP BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the shipbuilding industry and more particularly to devices for launching ships from launching slips.
The invention can be successively used for launching heavy ships to avoid unpermissible pressure of reaction forces at the threshold of the slip.
PRIOR ART The known launching devices comprise an arrangement developing a force for keeping the stern part of the launched ship afloat. This arrangement usually consists of pontoons mounted on the launching slide under the stern part of the ship and rigidly fixed to this part by means of a system of rods.
This arrangement is disadvantageous in that the process of manufacture of pontoons having large overall dimensions requires considerable metal and is associated with a high consumption of labor.
Another disadvantage of such arrangements with pontoons is that their construction includes a great number of connecting pieces at the place of securing the rods to the ship hull.
Furthermore, the pontoons, as a rule, are not streamlined, and their application does not exclude a possibility of the removal of water from the immersed portion of the slip which reduces the water level at the threshold of the slip, and, the efficiency of such devices.
OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the invention is to provide a device for launching a ship from a slip into water comprising such an arrangement for supporting its stern part afloat which ensures a maximum supporting force at a minimum weight and number of connecting pieces, i.e., has a maximum efficiency at a comparatively low cost of production and installation.
The above and other objects are attained due to the fact that the arrangement producing a supporting force for keeping the stern part of the ship afloat in the process of launching the ship from a slip is made in the form of a hydrofoil whose chord is parallel to the diametrical plane of the ship, while the nose of the hydrofoil is directed forward along the line of motion of the ship during the launching.
The angle of incidence of this hydrofoil is preferably selected within a range 'of l25.
It is expedient that the hydrofoil is hollow and provided with a rigid internal framing.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the ends of the hydrofoil may be provided with end covers whose shape corresponds to that of the hydrofoil.
The invention will be better understood form a consideration of one embodiment thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TI IE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side diagrammatical view of the device for launching a ship from a slip:
FIG. 2 is a view taken along the arrow A in FIG. 1:
FIG. 3 is a view along the arrow B in FIG.2: and
FIG.4 is a sectional view taken along the line C-C in F 16.2, the view looking in the direction of the arrows.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The device for launching a ship from a longitudinal slip (not shown) comprises a hydrofoil l (FIG.1) which is mounted under a stern part 2 of the ship so that its chord 3 is parallel to a diametral plane 4 (F162) of the ship, while its nose 5 (FIG.1) is in the direction D of movement of the ship during its launching.
Secured on upper plane 6 of the hydrofoil l is a rod system 7 made in the form of a spatial structure through which the hydrofoil l is rigidly connected to the stern part 2 of the ship. The rigid connection between the hydrofoil and the ship can be effected by any well known technological methods such as, weldmg.
Lower plane 8 of the hydrofoil 1 is secured to pads 9 which, in turn, are secured on a lanching slide 90 moving along the launching tracks of the slip during the launching.
Span L of the hydrofoil (FIG.2) must have a maximum possible value within the width of the slip but such that the hydrofoil does not interfere with the movement of the launching slide 9a along the tracks of the slip. i
The angle of incidence a of the hydrofoil 1 depends on the type of the ship and the shape of the hydrofoil 1 and in each particular case is selected under the conditions of a maximum lifting power.
Experiments have shown that the angle of incidence 11" is within the range of l5-25. The angle of incidence a in the given case is an angle between the lower plane 8 of hydrofoil l and the main plane l0 of the ship.
The hydrofoil 1 is hollow and is provided with a rigid inner framing 11 (FIGS.3 and 4) consisting of longitudinal and transverse members 12 and 13, respectively and rigidly connected with the sheathing of the hydrofoil l. The same framing is provided in the pad" 9.
At the ends of the hydrofoil 1 there are secured end covers 14 the shape of which is similar to that of the hydrofoil 1. These covers 14 improve the hydrodynamic properties of the hydrofoil l.
The proposed device operates as follows During the launching of the ship, the hydrodynamical lifting force of the hydrofoil l keeps the stern part 2 of the ship afloat.
This force reduces the reaction forces appearing at the threshold of the slip to such an extent that the specific pressures applied on the launching slide 9a and the ship hull do not exceed the permissible values without reducing the water level at the slip theshold.
After launching the ship, the device is removed and can be used for launching the next ship.
The experiments have shown that the application of such a hydrofoil allows the consumption of metal for manufacture and mounting of the device to be reduced by percent as compared with the pontoons, while the total cost of the device is three times as low at the same efficiency in operation.
We claim:
1. A device for launching a ship from a slip comprising in combination: a hydrofoil mounted on a launching slide under the stern part of the ship and developing a supporting force keeping said stern part afloat; a system of rods rigidly connecting said hydrofoil with said stern part of the ship, said hydrofoil being mounted 3. The device as set forth in claim 2, in which said hydrofoil is hollow and has a rigid inner framing.
4. The device as set forth in claim 3, in which covers are mounted at the ends of said hydrofoil, the shape of the covers being similar to the shape of the hydrofoil.
