Abstract

An abrading device to clean fittings and such, particularly exterior surfaces, has an abrasive sheet in combination with a backer. The abrasive sheet and backer are retained by connective that hold the member in predetermined position of use, yet permit changing of such position whenever desired by a simple sliding movement of the sheet.

Cole I ABSTRACT An abrading device to clean fittings and such, particularly exterior surfaces, has an abrasive sheet in combination with a backer. ABRADING DEVICE TO CLEAN SURFACES The principal object of my invention is to provide connectors for said combination of abrasive sheet and backer of extreme simplicity that are inexpensive to manufacture and easy to assembleand that permit ready changing of the position of said member by simply sliding the member along.
The foregoing and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may
be accomplished by a construction, combination andarrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to belimi-ted to the construction disclosed by the drawing nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my invention. In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of my abrading device, in closed position, the abrasive sheet being uppermost.
FIG. 2 is a plan view similar to FIG. 1, but with the hacker member being uppermost and in position of use.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1. 1
As illustrated, a backer is preferably elongate and made of resilient material that provides at least one friction surface for retention of the users fingersQA soft rubber is suitable, but should have a non-slippery surface so the users fingers will not slip on it during use. v
gripped by the latter when the latter is closed against said pivot member.
My'abrading device will ordinarily be used with a portion at one end of the abrasive sheet 36 locked in position by said retaining means 22, the opposite end A portion being freely slidable through said wire loop 20. To change the exposed abrasive surface, when it becomes worn, said retaining means 22 is unlocked,
and the abrasive sheet isslid along through said wire loop 20 until an unused portion is in position for use. Then the worn portion may be torn off.
, Said retaining means 22 may be used in place of said .loop member 12 when it is desirable to lock said backer l0 and said abrasive sheet 36 against sliding movement during use.
What I claim is: 1. A backer for anzabrading device, said backer havguide means having a l0op.member, a portion of said backer and avportion of said abrasive sheet extending At one end, said backer 10 is looped over as at 12 1 and. this loop member is closed by staples 1 4 or it could be byv-stitching or the like. Said looped part 12 passes through guide means shown as a wire loop 20, later referred to. At the opposite end; another loop 16 is formed in said backer l0which is closed by staples 18.
Retaining means '22, shown as well-known clinch buckle, has a cover 24 to which holding means'26, shown as a clamp or tongue, is attached by means of pivot pins extending outwardly from the latter into two depending opposite sides 31 and 33 of said cover 24. The latter has an elongate slot 28 at one end through which said loop 16 extends to connect said backer to said retaining means.
Said tongue 26 has a well-known toothed portion 32 extending angularly inward in position of use leaving a space between the latter and said cover. An abrasive sheet 36 extends freely through said wire loop 20, and at the opposite end portion it extends between said cover 24 and said toothed portion 32, being firmly through said loop member, another portion of said backer and another portion of said abrasive sheet being connected to said retaining means.
2. A backer as of claim 1, said retaining means having holding means adapted to fixedly hold said backer and said sheet to said retaining means.
3. A backer as of claim 2, said holding means having a cover outside of said device and a clamp inwardly thereof adapted to close on said cover, said abrasive sheet being between said clamp and said cover.
4. A backer as of claim 1, said backer having a first end portion looped over and extending through said guide means loop, said looped over portion being closed. I
5. A backer as of claim 4, said backer having a second end portion looped over, said retaining means having a slot, said second looped over portion extending through said slot and being closed.
' 6. A backer as of claim I, said backer having a friction surface at the outside to enable retention of a persons fingers thereon during use.
7. A backer as of claim 1, and an abrading sheet extending adjacent said backer, said guide means and said retaining means each having an opening therethrough,
said backer'and abrading sheet extending through said.
openings and beyond.

Claims (7)

1. A backer for an abrading device, said backer having guide means connected thereto, and retaining means connected to said backer at a point spaced from said guide means, in combination with an abrasive sheet associated therewith and adjacent thereto, said guide means having a loop member, a portion of said backer and a portion of said abrasive sheet extending through said loop member, another portion of said backer and another portion of said abrasive sheet being connected to said retaining means.
5. A backer as of claim 4, said backer having a second end portion looped over, said retaining means having a slot, said second looped over portion extending through said slot and being closed.
6. A backer as of claim 1, said backer having a friction surface at the outside to enable retention of a person''s fingers thereon during use.
7. A backer as of claim 1, and an abrading sheet extending adjacent said backer, said guide means and said retaining means each having an opening therethrough, said backer and abrading sheet extending through said openings and beyond.
