Beit known that I, RILEY W. CARPENTER, ot the. city oi' Brooklyn, inthe countyr ot' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Combining a Reed Inration.4 The bellows E, being arranged under strumont with a Piano-Forte; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference bein g' had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. in which- Figure 1 is a plan viewot' an instrument illust'ating my 1nvention,such parts as are not necessary to such illustration being; omitted. F g. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section ot' the same, with the keyboard of the reed instrument closed up. The 4object of this invention is to combine ay reed musical instrument, such as is known as a melodeon or har1noniuni, with a pianoforte, in Ithe same case, with a separate and distinct set ot keys foreach so that each can be played separately, or the one as an accom panimentto the other, by a difieren t player, without making the said case much larger or very perceptibly altering its appearance in any way:

-and to this end it consists in the arrangement of the reed-board within one end of the case in an upright position, and thearrangemcnt of the key-board to swing back into the case with the keys nearly close to the reed-board when it is not; desired to play upon the reeds; also, in a novel arrangement ot' the action, in conibination with such arrangement of the reeds and the key-board. e

To enable'others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A B is the case, exactly resembling the ease of a square piano-forte in all respects, but that it isbuilt out at the right-hand end to the extent of about tour inches,inereasing its length to that extent. The part B so built. out forms a space, b, to contain the upright reed-board l, and to receive the key-hoard D when the latter is shutup, as shown in Fig. 2, in which condition no part of the reed instrument, ex-

When the keyboard is moved up to the position shown in Fig. 2, the keys more away from the jacks,which always remain attached to the reed-board. When the keyboard is in the playing position the upper part ot' the opening m mis closed, or nearly so, by aboard, n, which serves as a name-board, and which is hinged to the keyboard. What I elnim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The irren gement of thelieed-bonrd G and the key-board D, in combination with each other and with the extended portion B of the oil-se A B, substantially ns and for the purpose herein described.

2. In combination with suoli arrangement of the reed-board and key-board Within the ease, the oon'ibinetion of the reeds sind keys by menus of j-ielcs G G, applied substantially as herein specified, to permit the closing np of the keyboard.
