Description

(No Model.)
R. W. GORRILL.
PILE PROTECTOR.
Patented Oct/25,1887.
i surface of the pile.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
RICHARD W. GORRILL, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
Pl LE-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,141, dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed August 24, 1887. Serial No. 247,791. (Nb model.)
.for protecting piles and other timbers from the ravages of marine insects; and it consists of an inclosing-covering of wire cloth, lath, or netting. with supports by which it is retained a short distance from the body of the pile, and
acovering or filling of hydraulic cement or other setting compound.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of myinvention, the figure shows a section of a pile with my coating or protecting devices.
Ais thepile,andBisthewirenet-work,which is preferably ofthat kind known as Wire lath.
(J O are vertical strips of met'al,0'r other suitable material, secured to the pile at regular intervals, so that when the sheet of wire lath B is secured around the outside. it will besu.p-' ported at ashort distance away from the outer This wire lath is placed about the pile so as to extend from a point just above low-water line to a point just below the mud or bottom when the pile has been driven. After the wire lath has been secured in place, hydraulic cement or other setting compound having the proper consistency is spread upon thelath, being also forced through the interstices so as to form a complete filling between the Qth and the body of the pile which it surrounds and protects, and it is spread on thick enough to cover the outside of the wire lath as well. When the compound has set,it forms a complete stone or hard coating, surrounding the pile to such a depth that the wire lath is embedded in it, and is also sisting of the wire lathing or netting secured &
around the pile and the interstices afterward filled with hydraulic or other hard-setting cement, which is spread over it so as to embed the netting, substantially as herein described.
2. A protection for piles and other structures, consisting of a wire netting or lathing secured around the pile, vertical supports or strips by which it is kept out of contact therewith, and hydraulic or other hard setting cement spread over so as to fill the space between the netting and the pile and also cover the netting, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RICHARD V. GORRILL.
