[ 5 7 ABSTRACT An adapter for elevating the work supporting surface of a sewing machine above the level of a machine supporting table top in which the adapter is formed with mounting means complemental to the regular mounting facilities on the machine supporting table top and on the sewing machine so that the adapter may be positioned in place without the use of tools.
1 Claim, 3 Drawing Figures BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Most sewing operations can be performed best when the work supporting surface of the sewing machine is arranged at the level of the top of the work table on which the sewing machine is supported. Certain sewing operations, however, can be accomplished more effectively when the sewing machine work support is elevated above the level of the top of the work table.
Heretofore, the elevating platforms which have been used to support a sewing machine above the level of the supporting table top have been difficult to install so that they have been useful only for permanent installations.
The problem of providing an adapter for changing the sewing machine elevation easily and conveniently without requiring reconstruction of the table top or of the sewing machine and without requiring the use of tools has been solved with the present invention. This invention provides an adapter which at the bottom is formed complemental to the conventional sewing machine accommodating sockets in a sewing machine power table; and at the top, is formed complemental to the mounting means on the sewing machine. As a result, the adapter of this invention may be inserted at will between the power table and the sewing machine.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the accompanying drawing:
FIG. I is a side elevational view of a sewing machine mounted in elevated position above a power table top by an adapter of this invention with the adapter and the power table top shown in cross section,
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view of the arrangement shown in FIG. 1 taken substantially along line 2-2 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along line 2-2 of FIG. 1 but showing the adapter removed and the sewing machine mounted directly in the power table top.
In the drawing a conventional sewing machine which is indicated generally at 11, includes a bed 12 formed with a work supporting surface 13, a standard 14 rising from the bed and sustaining a bracket arm 15 overhanging the bed.
A power table top 16 upon which the sewing machine may be carried is formed with a work supporting top surface 17 and with an aperture 18 large enough to accommodate the bed 12 of the sewing machine.
Bordering the aperture 18 in the power table top are three notches 19 each accommodating a block 20 of preferably resilient material, such as rubber, each block formed in the upper surface with a pari-spherical socket 21.
The bed 12 of the sewing machine carries three projections 22 each formed with a spherical head 23 complemental to the sockets 21 so that as shown in FIG. 3, the sewing machine may be arranged directly in the power table top 16 with the work supporting surface 13 of the sewing machine bed substantially co-planar with the work supporting surface 17 of the power table top. Preferably, two of the three spherically headed mounting projections 22 are arranged along the back of the sewing machine bed so that t e sewing machlne may be tipped back along a lengthwise axis, and two of the spherically headed mounting projections 22 are arranged on opposite sides of the standard 14 so that the sewing machine may be tipped back about a transverse axis.
The adapter of this invention is indicated at 24 in FIGS. 1 and 2, and carries near the bottom edge 25 three projections 32 each formed with a spherical head 33 identical in shape and arrangement to the projections 22 carried by the sewing machine. The adapter 24 can thus be substituted at will into the sockets 21 of the blocks 20 in the power table top in place of the sewing machine 11.
The top edge 26 of the adapter 24 is formed with three notches 29 each accommodating a block 30 of preferably resilient material, such as rubber, each block formed in the upper surface with a pari-spherical socket 31. The blocks 30 in the adapter 24 are preferably identical in shape and arrangement to the blocks 20 in the power table top so that the spherically headed projections 22 in the sewing machine may be accommodated readily into the sockets 31 in the adapter to sustain the work supporting surface 13 of the sewing machine above the level of the work supporting surface 17 of the power table top. The sewing machine may be tipped back both about a longitudinal or a transverse axis when supported in the adapter 24.
Bent wire locking members 34 each with a resilient sleeve 35, may be threaded into the bottom edge edge of the adapter 24. As shown in FIG. 2, the locking members 34 may be turned beneath the power table top 16 to secure the adapter 24 in place on the power table top so that the adapter will not be accidentally dislodged when the sewing machine is tipped back. The locking members 34 may be turned into the aperture 18 for removal of the adapter.
Having set forth the nature of this invention, what is claimed herein is:
1. In a sewing installation including a power table having a top defining a work supporting surface formed with mounting sockets, a sewing machine having a work supporting surface and mounting projections complemental to the sockets carried by a power table for sustaining the sewing machine work supporting surface substantially coplanar with a work supporting surface on the power table top,'the improvement characterized by an adapter having substantially parallel top and bottom edges and near the bottom edge having mounting projections complemental to the sockets carried by the power table top, and having near the top edge sockets complemental to the mounting projections on the sewing machine.
