FIG. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the same;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;

FIG. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a wire plunger and capillary tube forming a part of the present invention;
- FIG. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of release of the wire plunger and capillary tube from the holder after use, and
FIG. 7 is an enlarged sectional view similar to FIG. 5, illustrating a modified form of the invention for use with a different sized capillary tube.
DESCRIPTION OF FIGS. 1 TO 6 The apparatus of the present invention generally includes a holder unit ll] to which is attached filling and dispensing unit 112.
As shown to advantage in FIGS. 1 to 3, holder unit 10 includes a generally rectangular body 14, one end of which issues into a finger-engaging loop 16. Body 14 is provided with a central longitudinal bore 18 which communicates with a cut-out section 20.
A substantially Z-shaped spring member generally designated 22 is secured to body 14 by a screw 24. As shown to advantage in FIG. 4, Z-shaped member 22 includes a substantially flat portion 26, a part of which is held in contiguous relationship with body portion 14 by a screw 24. A central part of portion 26 is provided with an opening 28 to lend greater resiliency to the spring.
A terminal of portion 26 issues into an angular or sloping portion 30 which extends through cut-out section 20 of of body 14 at approximately a 45 angle to portion 26. Angular portion 30 is provided with a circular opening 32 which is in alignment with longitudinal bore 18 of body 14.
The free terminal of angular portion 30 then issues into a flat spring plate 34 which lies in spaced, substantially parallel relationship to holder unit 10 and to flat portion 26.
Filling and dispensing unit 12 includes a precision capillary tube 36 having one or more graduations 38 marked thereon. A wire plunger 40 is positioned within capillary tube 36 for longitudinal movement with respect thereto, for the purpose of admitting fluid to, and dispensing fluid from, capillary tube 36. In the form of invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5, wire plunger 40 is of smaller diameter than the internal diameter of capillary tube 36. Therefore, one terminal of wire plunger 40 is provided with a coating 42 of Teflon or other suitable material, the outer periphery of which engages the internal wall of capillary tube 36, to effect drawing of fluid into, and dispensing liquid from, tube 36.
Adjacent the opposite terminal of wire plunger 40 is a peripheral annular recess 44 which, upon insertion of wire plunger 40 through longitudinal bore 18 of body 14, is engaged by that portion of member 30 forming circular opening 32, for holding the wire plunger in the bore under urging of Z-shaped spring member 22.
OPERATION In use of the apparatus of the present invention, the dispensing unit thereof is grasped by four fingers of the hand, with the index finger extending through loop 16 of holder unit 10 as shown in FIG. 1. By movement of the index finger, wire plunger 40 may be moved longitudinally through capillary tube 36 to draw fluid into the tube. The amount of fluid drawn into the tube may be accurately controlled by movement of the index finger. I
The fluid may then be dispensed from the tube by movement of the index finger held within the loop, in the opposite direction. Here again, precise amounts of fluid may be dispensed from the capillary tube by virtue of the controlled movement of the wire plunger with one finger. 4
It is a salient feature of the present invention that after the tube and plunger have been contaminated by the fluid, these parts may be easily removed from holder unit 10 for disposal in a single-handed operation in the manner illustrated in FIG. 6. In carrying out this operation, flat spring plate 34 is engaged by the thumb to disengage the spring from the wire plunger 40, thereby permitting the latter to gravitate from its position within holder unit 10, for disposal. This same procedure is also followed in the event that the capillary tube becomes broken during use.
FORM OF THE INVENTION ILLUSTRATED IN FIG. 7
In FIG. 7, there has been illustrated a modified form of apparatus wherein a capillary tube 46 of smaller capacity is employed. In this form of the invention, wire plunger 48 is passed through capillary tube 46, the wire plunger being of substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the bore of capillary tube 46. Therefore, no tip member is required at the end of wire plunger 48, and fluid is drawn into and dispensed from, capillary tube 46 simply by longitudinal movement of the wire plunger with respect to the capillary tube.
While there has been herein shown and described the presently preferred forms of the present invention, it is to be understood that such has been done for purposes of illustration only, and that various changes may be made therein within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
