IDENTIFICATION DEVICES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Various articles such as those in rolled, tubular form, including engineering or architectural drawings; wall paper, textiles and the like, must be marked with various indicia for identification and other informational purposes. Conventionally, such markings appear along outer surface portions of the rolled article. When such rolled articles are stacked for storage, it is difficult to select the desired article without examining a large or small number of articles withdrawn from the stack for examination of their identifying means.
Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide improved identification devices for articles, more particularly in rolled, tubular form, including tab means abutting one end of the article for carrying indicia on the outer surface thereof, together with resilient means extending from the tab means for resiliently and frictionally engaging surface portions of the article.
A further object of this invention is to provide identification devices of the character described, where the resilient means includes an endless elastic band having an attached loop portion; the loop portion extending transversely about the outer surface of the tubular article and parallel portions of the band extending forwardly from the loop portion and in contact with longitudinally extending outer surfaceportions of the tubular article in engaging relation to the tab means for securely holding the same against one end of thetubular article. 1

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS and attaching means of FIGS. 4, 5, associated with a tubular article.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The identification devices of the instant invention are adapted to be detachably mounted on articles such as rolled matter including engineering and architectural drawings, wall paper, textiles and the like. The device in the form of tab means is held against one end of the tubular, rolled article by resilient means engageablewith inner or outer surface portions of the article part be obvious other suitable material, in substantially circular form. The same comprises a pair of similar sections 4, 5 hinged together as at 6.
Tab section 4 is formed with a pair of laterally related slots 7 for mounting attaching means S thereon. Such attaching means takes the form of a U shaped member of thin, springy metal such as steel or the like; and comprising a bridging portion 1, inturned shoulder portions 2 at the opposite ends thereof and displaced leg portions 3.
Tab means T in its initial, op-en form, prior to assembly with attaching means S, is provided on inner surface portions with a suitable adhesive A, which may be of the pressure sensitive type. The adhesive surfaces are covered with usual protective sheet elements which are stripped off when the tab T is to be associated with attaching means S.
The tab section 5 may be pre-marked on its outer surface with various information indicia relating to a rolled, tubular aryicle with which the device is to be associated. The attaching means S is then mounted on tab section 4, with legs 3 passing through slots 7, thus locat ing bridging portion 1 between sections 4, 5 which are adhesively secured to each other.
The thus assembled tab means T and attaching means 8 may be mounted on a rolled, tubular article, not shown, with thetab means T abutting one end thereof and the displaced leg portions 3 frictionally engaging opposed inner surface portions of the tubular article.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. Here the tab means comprises a single section 8 formed with slots 7, as previously described.
The tab section 8 includes an integral, hinged lug por tion 9 which is foldable into contact with tab section 8. In thiscase, a disc 10 enclosesthe bridging portion 1 of the attaching means and is adhesively or otherwise secured to the outer face of tab section 8. The displaced spring legs 3 bear against interior surface portions of tubular roll R, which for illustration may be a roll of wall paper. In such case, cover disc 10 is derived from the wall paper, to thereby readily identify the roll R. Additional information indicia may be applied to the outer surface of the lug portion 9 which is adhesively secured to tab section 8.
In lieu of the spring metal attaching means S, elastic band means may be used to mount the tab means on the end of a rolled, tubular member, as indicated in FIGS. 4-6. Thus, the tab means comprises circular sections 12, 13 in hinged relation, as previously described.

Thus, as shown in FIG. 1, the identification device embodying the invention comprises tab means generally indicated at T and attaching means associated with tab means, generally indicated at S. Tab means T may be formed of paper, cardboard, plastic or Section 13 is formed with edge recesses 14 in opposed relation to each other.
The attaching means comprises an endless rubber band 15 having a short loop 16A attached at the opposite ends thereof to band 15; thus providing loop portions 16, 16A. A peripheral portion of band 15 is located between tab sections l2, 13, by way of recesses 14. The sections 12, 13 are then secured togetherby adhesive, staple means, or the like.
As shown in FIG. 6, the device is readily mounted on tubular roll RI, with tab sections 12, 13 abutting one end thereof and elastic band portion 15 extending longitudinally along outer surface portions of roll R1. The loop portions 16, 16A encircle roll R1 at a point remote from the end thereof, thus holding the tab means securely in place. The outer surface of tab section 12 is suitably marked with the desired informative indicia relating to the substance of roll R1.
It is understood that attaching means S is formed from spring metal of suitable gage and springiness, so that the leg portions 3 may be squeezed together for insertion in the tubular article at one end thereof, the leg portions then springing apart to frictionally bear on opposed inner surface portions of the article.
The devices disclosed herein may also be used with other articles having slots to receive leg portions 3 of attaching means S, or articles having an outer surface configuration for receiving band portions 15 and loop portions 16, 16A.
1 claim:
1. Identification means for detachable mounting on one end of a tubular article, said means comprising tab means for carrying identification indicia on one surface thereof, and resilient attaching means extending from said tab means for embracing surface portions of said tubular article, said attaching means comprising an elastic member having a first loop portion and a second loop portion of unitary construction with said first loop portion, said tab means comprising a pair of superposed, hinged tab elements, one of said tab elements being formed with a pair of opposed slots extending inwardly toward each other from peripheral portions of said one tab element, the first loop portion of said elastic member having an intermediate portion interposed between said tab elements and extending through the slots of said one tab element and elongated leg portions extending from said intermediate portion and contacting longitudinally extending opposed surface portions of said tubular article, said second loop portion encircling the outer surface of said tubular article, said leg portions being connected to said second loop portion and means for securing said tab elements together to slidably retain said intermediate loop portion therebetween.

Claims (1)

1. Identification means for detachable mounting on one end of a tubulAr article, said means comprising tab means for carrying identification indicia on one surface thereof, and resilient attaching means extending from said tab means for embracing surface portions of said tubular article, said attaching means comprising an elastic member having a first loop portion and a second loop portion of unitary construction with said first loop portion, said tab means comprising a pair of superposed, hinged tab elements, one of said tab elements being formed with a pair of opposed slots extending inwardly toward each other from peripheral portions of said one tab element, the first loop portion of said elastic member having an intermediate portion interposed between said tab elements and extending through the slots of said one tab element and elongated leg portions extending from said intermediate portion and contacting longitudinally extending opposed surface portions of said tubular article, said second loop portion encircling the outer surface of said tubular article, said leg portions being connected to said second loop portion and means for securing said tab elements together to slidably retain said intermediate loop portion therebetween.
