SPCIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,895, dated October 18, 188?.
Application {ilod August 6, 1887. Serial Noi 246,364. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN FAY LooMIs, of Shelby, in the county ot' Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitman or Pump Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the pitman or pump rod shown and described in my previous patent, No. 364,423, which was constructed so -as to be elastic in the direction of its length by the intel-position ofa spring, whereby it was made to take up strains and jars and cause ashorter stroke for the piston in proportion to the increased speed of the wheel.
My present invention is designed to provide a better spring-coimection; and to thisend it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, which I will no'w proceed to describe in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged cross-section through line x as of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention; and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing another modification.
A A represent the two adjacent-ends of the pumprod, between which the spring-connection is interposed. This connection consists of four springs, B B B B', each of which is ofthe same pattermand consists of af flat steel bar bent with a rgradual turn or curve, so as to allow its branches to stand at right angles to each other. One set of ends of the springs B B are bolted together through the section A of the pump-rod by bolts E, and one set of ends of the springs B B are bolted together through the section A of the pump-rod by bolts E. The branches of the springs projecting at right angles to the pump-rod are nowconnected together by spacing-blocks C, of hard wood or other material, and yokey shaped clamps a, which embrace the ends of the springs on each side of the rod, and also the spacing-blocks. These yokes or clamps have screw-th readed ends, which pass through holes in a cross bar or plate, D, and are secured thereto by screw-nuts b on the outside, by turning which up tightly in place the springs and spacing-blocks are tightly clamped together.
Now, When a reciprocation is imparted to the pump-rod by the wind-wheel, it will be seen that the springs make the stroke elastic, and the springs upon one side balance those upon the other, so that no guides are required. To Vary the elasticity of' this vspring-connection, it is onl y necessary to adjust the clamps and spacing-blocks farther from or closer to the pump-rods, a close adjustment making a stift' spring and a remote one making a limber one.
If desired, the springs B B may be made in one piece, as shown in Fig. 3. I may also use, in connection with the springs B and B', additional or supplemental springleaves, as shown r in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with the two sections of pump-rod, of the rightangular springs arranged upon both sides ofthe rod, and clamps and spacing-blocks arranged between the portions of the springs which are at right angles to the rod, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the two sections of pump-rod, of the four right-angularly-bent springs having one set of ends bolted to the rod-sections and the other set projecting at right angles, and the spacing-blocks and clamps connecting these right angularly projecting ends, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN FAY LOOMIS.
