COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,656, dated October 18, 1887.

Be it known that I, THOMAS B. ZELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kos` suth, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks, ofwhich the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination-locks; andit consists in acertain 1o novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter', and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l isa front view of the lock. Fig. 2 is a rear view with the plate removed to show the mechanism'. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section ofthe lock. Fig. et is a section on the line :c fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the disks. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the sliding bolt.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the case of the lock, in the front edge of which is formed an opening through which projects the nose of the sliding bolt B. The said bolt is bifurcated at the rear end to form the two parallel arms O C, provided withlongitudinal slots c c, and the main body B of the bolt is provided, near the front-portion thereof, with a bearing, b, adapted to align with a slot, a, in the face of the case A.
D designates a spindle journaled in the bearingb, and having the knob or handle D on the outer end, which is provided with a iiange, d, bearing against the face ofthe lock.
E represents a circular disk secured on the inner end of the spindle D, and the under portion or side of the disk is cutaway to leave a ring or annular flange, F, around the outer edge, the outer edge of which ring is notched, as seen at f.
G designates a stationary stud secured to the case of the lock in direct line with the center of the sliding bolt, and when the said bolt is drawn back the stud passes through a radial groove, F', in the under side of the ring or ange F, the said groove being a continuation ot'one of the notches f.. Thus the stud passes within the flange, and if the disk is turned so that the groove F is out of alignment with the stud the bolt cannot be shot. 5o It will be seen that the disk can be turned entirely around in either direction, the same as it' the stud were on the outside of the same.
H H are spindles journaled in bearings in the face-plate of the lock-case, which spindles project through the longitudinal slots c c in the arms C, and they are provided on the outer ends with handles or knobs H H', similar to the knob D', and they are also provided with the flanges hh, similar to the liange d. It will be seen that when the bolt is extended or 6o withdrawn the slotted arms will slide on the spindles H H and thus guide the motion of the bolt.
I I are disks secured on the inner ends of the spindles, which are similar in shape to the disk E, having the annular flanges K K, provided on the outer edges with the notches 7c 7c and in the lower side with the radial groove K.
L L are small studs secured rigidly to the 7o arms C O of the bolt, in line with the centers of the disks I, and it will be seen that when the radial grooves K in the said disks are aligned with the studs and the bolt is drawn back the studs will pass through the grooves and enter the open space in the interior of the disks, thus allowing the latter to be turned around, the same as when the bolt is shot.
It Will be seen thatinstead of cutting out the entire under portion of the disks, with the eX- 8( ception of the annular flanges, a narrow annular groove may be formed just within the annular flange and at the inner end of the radial grooves. The advantage of this feature will be evident. Vhen the disks are so constructed that when the bolt is withdrawn to open the door the said disks cannot be rotated, because the studsare engaged in slots ornotches in the disks, it is obvious that if a person should glance at the combination on the face of the 9o lock he could open it as well as the owner. Thus a careful Watch mustbe kept on the lock at all times while it' is unlocked, or the combination will be discovered and the safety of the lock lost. To obviate this danger I form an annular groove in the underside of the disks at the inner end of the radial groove, which admits the stud, and thus when the bolt is retracted the disks are free'to be turned in either direction. In the drawings, instead of showing the roo sides of the liangcs when the bolt is extended vzo and close to the inner sides of the same when the bolt is retracted. This is to prevent all play of the bolt.
The object in" notchiug the edges of the lianges is, that in attempting to piek the lock the studs will become engaged in the notches,
and the operator will be misled to think thatl he has found a portion of the combination, and thus the safety of the lock is increased.
The flanges h h and d, on the operatingknobs of the disks, which flanges bear and operate on the face of the lock, are provided each with a series of letters or numbers around the periphery, and indices are placed on the face of t-he lock to indicate the combinations. (Numbers are shown in the drawings.)
M designates av spiral spring surrounding the spindle of each of the disks and bearing at the ends, respectively, against the under side ot' the disks and the upper side of the slotted arm or main body otl the bolt. The object .of the said springs is to press the disk away from the bolt, and consequently draw the anges h h firmly against the face of the lock-case, and also to prevent play of other parts of the lock.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a lock, the combinafion, with the case having the slot a, of the sliding bolt B, the stationary stud G, the disk E, journaled in the bolt and having its'spindle inserted through the slot a, the annular flange F at the edge of the disk, having the radial groove F', whereby the said disk may be passed over the stud G and rotated so as to cause the said stud to contact with the inner edge of the annular Iiange, and means for guiding and locking the cnds of the bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combination lock, the combination of the sliding bolt B, having the rearwardly extending parallel arms() U, provided with longitudinal slots c'o and studs L, spindles stud G, in une withthe centen of the boit, and the disk journaled on the bolt and having the annular liange F, provided with the -radial groove F therethrough to receive the lor" the bolt and passing through the slot a, the
handle or knob D on the outer end, provided with a ange havingrcornbination letters or numerals, the disk E on the inner end of the spindle D, having the annular flange F, provided with a series of notches, f, in the periphery, and the groove F', the stationary stud G, to pass into the said groove, the spindles H H, journaled in bearings in the faceplate ofthe lock and passing through the slots in the arms C, respectively, the handles or knobs H' H on the outer ends of the spindles, provided with flanges bearing combination letters or numerals, the disks I I on the inner ends of the spindles, having the flanges K K, provided with notches k k and the radial grooves K' K', and the studs L L on the said slotted arms C, adapted to enter the grooves K', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a combinationvlock, the combination of the sliding bolt B, having the slotted arms GC, spindles H H, journaled in the lock-case and passing through the slots in the arms C, disks I I on the inner ends of the spindles, having grooves in the under side, studs L L on the slotted arms to enter the grooves, handles or knobs H' on the outer ends of the spindles, having the anges 7L h,bearing against the face of the lock and provided with combination letters or numbers, the spindle D, journaled in a bearing in the body of the bolt and moving therewith, disk E on the inner end of the spindle, having a groove in the underside, stationary stud G, to enter the groove, knob D' on the outer end ofthe spindle, having the tiange d, bearing against the face of the lock, and the springs M, surrounding the spindles D and H and bearing against the under sides of the disks and the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
