SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371.409, dated October 11, 1887.

.To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Navarre, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Figure l is a side View of a fence containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a top View. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the panels. Fig. 4 is a perspective of one of the posts, detached.

In the drawings, A represents a fencevpanel, which, so far as my invention is concerned, may be entirely of wood, or of wooden slats and wire, or even made entirely from metal, as may be desired. I have shown the panel as consisting of upright pieces a, horizontal strips b, and diagonal braces c, two of the vertical posts a being situated at the ends of the panel. One of the horizontal bars or strips b, preferably one situated about two-thirds ofthe distance from the bottom tothe top of the panel, is extended at each end a short distance beyond the end uprights, a, as seen at d d, for a purpose to be described.

The posts E, which support the panels, are provided with ground bars or feet c, which are set transversely to the panels, whereby they are adapted not only to hold the posts upon the ground, but also to receive, support, and brace the end bars, a, of the panelframe. These posts, which preferably extend above ground a distance about equal to twothirds the height of the fence, are notched or slotted,

as at g, at their upper ends, these slots being open upwardly and in the direction of the line of the fence. In these slots are seated the pro- 4o jecting ends d of the panels, thus holding the upper part of the fence. The lower edge of the fence-panel is held and steadied by being seated at either end in notches or sockets h provided therefor in the posts E.

The fence is set up by first placing the posts at the proper distance apart and then sliding, by a vertical movement, the panels into their seats between the posts, the projecting ends d of the horizontal bars resting in slots g and the lower ends of end uprights, a, resting in notches Il.. Slots or recesses are formed at l1l in these ground bars or feet e, in which the lower ends of the said bars a can be fitted. These slots or recesses h are out ofthe vertical lines of slot g, and hence the panels can be held in vertlcal planes, notwithstanding the fact that the bars b, with their projecting ends d, lie away from the vertical center of the panel. The ground bars vor feet e may be formed of narrow boards nailed or otherwise fastened to the lower' ends of the posts.

A cornerpost is shown at E', Fig. 4. This differs from posts E in having in the upper end two slots, g g, arranged at right angles to each other, and having, also, the faces at right angles to each, as well as those opposite, if necessary, provided with offsets t' and seats h.

The panels are easily removable, thus permitting a team to enter a field at any place desired, and they may be held in place by caps covering `the posts or by buttons pivoted thereon.

I am aware of the fact that removable panels, broadly considered, are old, and also that such panels have been used in combination with slotted posts, and do not broadly claim such features of construction as of my invention.

Vhat I claim is- In a portable fence, the combination, with the post E, having the slot f/ at the upper end and a panel constructed with a projecting longitudinal bar, b, adapted to tit in the said slot, of the ground bars or feet e, provided with a seat, It, for the lower end of the vertical bar a of the panel, said seat h being situated in relation to the slot g, substantially as set forth, whereby the panel is held properly vertical, as described.
