Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABNER C. AIN GER AND SAMUEL W. WEBSTER, OF STOOKHOLM, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL W. WEBSTER.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,140, dated December 9, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known th at we, ABNER C. AINGER, and SAMUEL W. WEBSTER, both of Stockholm, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Frames for Storing and Turning Oheeses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of our improved cheese-frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the back thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The subject of the said invention is a pivoted frame of shelves, adapted for the storing of cheeses in such a manner that they may be exposed to a free circulation of air, and may be turned, rubbed, greased, and receive all other necessary attention. with great case, convenience, and thoroughness, Without the necessity of lifting the cheese by hand from the time they are first placed on the shelves till ready for market.
The invention consists in certain devices and arrangements whereby, the manipulation of the apparatus is made more easy and convenient than with those previously in use, and the cheese preserved from injury while being turned.
To enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, to fully understand and make use of the same, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A stationary frame is formed of two uprights, a a, mounted on feet a attached to the ends of a horizontal bar, b, and having a revolvin g frame fitted and suspended within it by pivots o c. The pivoted frame is formed of two side strips, d d, connected at top and bottom by horizontal strips e e. Between the two side strips, d d, shelves f are placed, the ends of said .shelves being fitted in grooves g made in the inner sides of the sides trips, d d, the shelves being capable of being readily inserted and withdrawn from their grooves. To one side of the frame B a back is attached. This back is formed by attachin g slats 7L to battens which are secured to the pivoted frame by plates or tongues i, taking into spring-latches j. The slats h are equal in width to the spaces between the shelves. To one side of the re volvin g or reversible frame there are two pins, k lo, attached as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The device is used as follows: The cheeses are taken from the press and laid on the shelves f, every alternate shelf being used, and the shelf directly over each row of cheeses removed. The sides and tops of the cheeses are then greased, the she1ves that were removed replaced, and the pivoted frame reversed or inverted, and the upper shelves, which were the lower ones at the previous position of the frame, removed, and the oppo site sides of the cheeses are greased. The cheeses, when placed in the pivoted frame, are so adjusted as to balance it, and the pins 70 k prevent the frame B being turned in the wrong direction, and a spring-bolt, l, engaging with a notched plate, m, or m, on the side holds the pivoted frame in a vertical position. The back h iprevents the cheeses falling out when the frame is turned. Any number of frames may be used, according to the number of cheeses to be operated upon, but one back and one set of extra shelves being required and the cheeses do not require to be moved from the shelves until they are ready for market.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The removable back h i, constructed as described and employed in connection with the pivoted frame d e f, in manner substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of our improvement in cheeseframes signed by us in presence of tho subscribing witnesses.
