HORSESHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,327. dated October 11, 1887.

Application filed December 31, 1886. Serial No. 223,147.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAuUEL B. JEROME, of the city, county, and State of New York,have invented a new and Improved Horseshoe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists ofa horseshoe having its calks struck out of the web of the shoe within the areaof its width, pockets being formed at the upper surface of the shoeto receive ointment for medicating the hoof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved horseshoe, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.

The horseshoe A is made with one or more calks. a, struck out of the body or web b of the shoe by a droppress, die, rollers, or otherwise. The forming of the calks also at the same time forms the pockets 0 at the upper surface of the material of the shoe, the same being depressed to set out the calks upon the opposite side. The nail-holes (I may also be formed in the shoe at the time and by the same operation that the calks are formed.

When the shoes are applied to the horses foot,the pockets 0 may be filled with hoof-ointment or other substance to medieate the hoof and keep it moist and in a healthy state.

By striking the calks out of the web or body of the shoe the labor of making extra calks is avoided and the shoe is reduced in weight, while it is at the same time as serviceable as the ordinary hand-made or hand-calked shoe. A shoe thus formed possesses the advantages of lightness and cheapness.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a horseshoe having several cavities, 0, formed in the upper surface of the shoe, wholly between the edges of the shoe-web, and formed with several calks, a, upon its under surface, and also wholly within the edges of the sl1oe-web,substantially as described.

2. The horseshoe A, formed with heel and toe cavities c, and one or more side cavities between the heel and toe cavities, and formed with heel and toe calks a, and one or more side calks between the heel and toe calks, the cavities c and calks a being formed wholly between the edges of the web of the shoe, thus forming parallel surfaces at both the inner and outer edge of the shoe, substantially as described.
