Abstract

INVENTO/Q Mama/v 2. DA W6 GUN BUTT LOCATOR BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to shooting equipment, and more specifically apparatus for locating the stock ofa rifle or shotgun during shooting.

During contest shooting it is often necessary for the marksman to bring the stock of his gun or rifle into position adjacent his shoulder as rapidly as possible, in order that required shooting accuracy may be realized. This is also true in the field, where a hunter may wish to suddenly raise the gun-stock to correct shooting position in order to have sufficient opportunity to shoot very briefly appearing game or fowl. Further, there is a need for very simple and easily usable means for repeatedly positioning the stock of a gun or rifle at the same location adjacent the shoulder, to enhance shooting consistency and accuracy. In this regard, I am aware of no device which embodies the combination of unusually advantageous features of construction, modes of operation and results afforded by the present gun butt locator.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is a major object of the invention to provide a gun butt locator characterized as fulfilling the above needs, and further as embodying unusually advantageous features of construction, mode of use and results as referred to above, and as will appear.

Basically, the locator comprises a relatively thin pad adapted to be attached to a marksman s shooting jacket with the pad oriented in generally upright position; and, an upright, generally U-shaped holder integrally carried by the pad so as to project at the pad front to downwardly and rearwardly seat a generally vertical gun butt, with the butt rear face engaging the pad and the butt lower portion saddled or seated in the holder. As will appear, the holder and pad may consist of leather or molded plastic material, and may be of easily manufactured one-piece construction. Also, the holder arms and lower portion project forwardly from the pad between one-fourth and three-fourths inch, for best results, as will be described.

Additionally, the pad may be bonded to the shooters jacket and a cushion may be located at the inner side of the jacket, opposite the pad, to aid in cushioning the reaction impact transmitted during shooting.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention, as well as the details of an illustrative embodiment, will be more fully understood from the following description and drawings in which:

In the drawings, the locator 10 is shown to include a relatively thin, pliant pad 11 adapted to be attached to the front side of a shooters jacket 12, with the pad oriented generally upright. In this regard, the pad may for example consist ofa leather, rubber or plastic sheet, and its back side may be easily bonded at 13 to the jacket fabric. Alternatively, the attachment may be by suitable stitching to the jacket proximate the pad periphery.

The locator 10 also includes a one-piece, upright, generally U-shaped and stiff holder 14 affixed to or integral with the pad to project at the'front side thereof. This orientation of the U-shaped holder readily adapts it to easily seat and precisely locate a generally vertical gun butt, seen at 15, with the rear face 15a of the gun butt engaging the pad extent 11a. The butt lower portion 15b is snugly saddled in the holder lower portion 14a, and the holder upright arms 14b block lateral deflection of the gun butt. Accordingly, the shooters gun or rifle may be quickly and precisely located at the butt end, for aiding and enhancing consistent and accurate shooting.

For a right-handed shooter, the pad 1] may be attached to the shooters jacket in the area between the right collar bone and shoulder. FIG. 1 also shows the attachment or location of a cushion 17 at the inner side of the jacket 12 opposite the locator, to cushion the impact of the reaction force transmission from the gun butt to the shooters body. That cushion may consist of a plastic sponge or sponge rubber body suitably bonded to the inner side ofjacket 12.

The holder 14 may for example consist of leather integrally attached to the pad 11, or it may consist of rubber plastic of the same composition as the pad, so that the pad and holder may be molded at the same time. FIG. 3 illustrates a cross-section taken through such an integral pad and holder 18, the holder arms being joined at their outer sides with the pad at curved fillet locations 19 for structural unity and offering resistance to flexing. The inner walls 22 of the holders are straight and generally perpendicular to the pad extent 18b, to match the sides of the gun butt to be received therebetween.

Dimensionally, it is desirable that the holder base 14a and arms 14b project forwardly from the pad by an amount between one-fourth and three-fourths inches, over the major extent of the holder. More than it inch projection interferes unduly with rapid placement of the gun butt into the holder, and less than A inch projection results in uncontrolled slippage of the gun butt from the holder. Note the upward taper of the legs 14b in FIG. 1, which aids in placement of the gun stock into raised position in the holder, for subsequent dropping of the stock into seated position.

FIG. 2 showsthe holder spaced inwardly from the edges of the pad, which are curved at 20 to match the holder curvature, so that the border stitching (at 21-, for example) of the pad to ajack'et will be located at about the same distance from the holder, for strength and equalized load distribution.

I. A gun butt locator, comprising:

a. a relatively thin pad adapted to be attached to a shooting jacket with the pad oriented generally upright and an upright generally U-shaped holder integrally carried by the pad so as to project at the front thereof to downwardly and rearwardly seat a generally vertical gun butt with the butt rear face engaging the pad and the butt lower portion seated in the holder, c. the holder having generally upright legs which taper in an upright direction.

7. The locator of claim 5 wherein the pad is bonded to that portion of the jacket which lies opposite the shooters chest.

8. The locator of claim 1 wherein the holder projects from the pad between one-fourth and three-fourths inch over the major U-shaped extent of the holder.

Claims (8)

1. A gun butt locator, comprising: a. a relatively thin pad adapted to be attached to a shooting jacket with the pad oriented generally upright and b. an upright generally U-shaped holder integrally carried by the pad so as to project at the front thereof to downwardly and rearwardly seat a generally vertical gun butt with the butt rear face engaging the pad and the butt lower portion seated in the holder, c. the holder having generally upright legs which taper in an upright direction.

2. The locator of claim 1 wherein the pad and holder consist of leather.

3. The locator of claim 1 wherein the pad and holder consist of molded plastic.

4. The locator of claim 1 wherein the pad and holder are of one-piece construction.

5. The locator of claim 1 including said jacket to which the pad is bonded to the outer side thereof.

6. The locator of claim 5 including a cushion at the inner side of the jacket and opposite the locator pad.

7. The locator of claim 5 wherein the pad is bonded to that portion of the jacket which lies opposite the shooter''s chest.

8. The locator of claim 1 wherein the holder projects from the pad between one-fourth and three-fourths inch over the major U-shaped extent of the holder.
