Description

(No Model.)
M. SWEET.
CURRY COMB. No. 370,748. I Patented Sept. 27, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT MILES SWEET, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE SWEET & CLARK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE CURRY-MB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,748, dated September 2'7, 1887.
Application filed May 9, 1885. Serial No. 164,943. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILEs SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to curry-combs which are provided with a grasping device over the back, besides a handle on one side; and the object of my improvement is to provide a currycomb with not only a handle or a thumb-rest on one side and a grasping device for the fin- 5 gers located opposite said thumbrest and parallel with the comb-bars, but also with a grasping device extending at right angles to said comb-bars and extending from the thumb-rest to the first-stated grasping device, and forming a back brace for the latter.
Another object is to construct a curry-comb having all the above-stated elements, of as few pieces and with as few rivets as possible, as the commercial success of an article of this nature depends greatly upon the reduced cost at which it can be produced.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then be pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a currycomb constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar partsvthroughout both views.
The end bars, A, rear bar, A, rear post or thumb-rest, A and shank A for the wooden handle 0, with the front grasping-bar, A, and the transverse grasping bar or handle A are all integral, and cast at one operation, with the pins a, forming the attachments by which the comb-bars B are secured to the end bars, A, of the frame. These end bars are preferably scalloped to form knockers at each corner, and a cross-section of the shank A is in the form of a cross having its ends bearing against the interior of the handle 0. The rear post, A is of such a width and height to present a fair rest for the thumb of a person. The front grasping-bar, A, is above and is inclined over a portion of the comb-bars to reduce the distance between it and the thumb-rest and make it of proper size for a good grasp, and the transverse grasping bar or handle A of any suitable width and form and inclination, is across and at the proper height above the comb-bars, for the passageof the fingers between it and said comb-bars, besides furnishing a strong brace for the front grasping-bar and strengthening the whole frame.
A curry-comb of this construction can thus be grasped from above, either around the bars A with the fingers nearly extended, or around the bar A with the fingers nearly closed, and thus the various muscles of the operatorshand are released from continuous tension and strain.
Having now fully described my invention,
I claim- 1. In combination with curry-comb bars, the curry-comb frame consisting of the end bars, 7c A, the rear bars, A, having the post A and shank A the grasping-bar A*, curved and bent over the front comb-bars, and the bar A transversely inclined above the comb-bars, said frame or all its component oars being made integral, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with curry-comb bars, a curry-comb frame provided with a handle, 0, on one side thereof, a grasping-bar inclined v8o transversely across said comb-bars, and a second grasping-bar at right angles with the firststated grasping-bar and bent over the front comb-bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
'MiLEs swEET.
