Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
LORENZO WINSLOW, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED METHOD OF FASTENING BITS 0R AUGERS IN THEIR STOCKS OR HANDLES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,022, dated November 25, 18C2.
T0 a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO WINsLow, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have made and invented a certain new and useful method of fastening bits or angers in their stocks or handles, `and of effecting similar results in like cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Of said drawings, Figure 1 shows my im proveinent as applied to a carpenters brace. Fig. 2 shows the same device as applied to an auger-handle.
rlhe nature of this invention will be best understood from a description ofthe construction and mode of action of my device as applied to a brace and bit, as shown in Fig, l.
In said ligure A is a metal socket which receives the bit. Against the side A of this socket the bit is firmly held by the pressure oi the roller b on the opposite side, which roller is pressed downward by means of a light spring, sopas always to remain in contact both with the bit and the inclined plane on the opposite side of the socket, as will be readily seen on inspecting the drawings. The aforesaid spring is not designed to effect anything toward holding the bit in its place, but rnerely to keep the roller b so that it will always be in contact both with the bit and the inclined plane, the result of which contact being to wedge the bit tightly against A. Any effort to withdraw it only increases this Wedging action, while at the same time the bit is easily loosened by simply drawing back the roller b, which is effected by means of the projecting knob attached to the rod which carries the roller. V
Itis also obvious that as we depend upon the pressure of the roller upon but one point of the bit, (the other side of said bit resting against a plane metal bearing.) it is not necessary that the bits used in this fastening be litted with great accuracy to the socket. In any case they will Le firmly held, a point of considerable importance, as it allows of other bits being used besides the ones belonging to the brace in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the rod and spring r s, carrying the roller b, with the inclined plane d, when arranged in connection with a stock or handle, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
LORENZO WINSLOV.
