LAP-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,084, dated September 20, 1887.
Application filed July 27, l8'n7. Serial No. 245,462.
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. PULLIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Edinburg, in the county of Cleveland and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lap-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lap-rings;anditconsistsintheconstructionand arrangement of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and
pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved lapring. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ring with the two portions thereof shown separated and opened to one side.
A and A indicate the two sections of the ring, which, as shown, are formed of an elliptical contour; but it is obvious that any suitable configuration is readily adapted to accomplish the same result. The one side of each of the sections is formed with an opening, a, which are reversel y situated when the two sections are united, as shown in the drawings.
The two sections A and A are pivotally connected by a headed bolt, a, passing through said sections, and secured in connection therewith by anut, a, mounted over the end thereof. Diagonally across from the bolt a another bolt, a is mounted in permanent engagement with thesection A, and adapted to be removably connected to the section A. This bolt to is of an ordinary form of bolt, but is constructed with a T-head, a", which is adapted to pass through an elongated slot, a formed in the section A. The outer opening of the slot a corresponds with a transverse groove, a. The round portion of the bolt 01. is passed through the section A and a nut, a, secured on the end thereof, through the medium of which and of the T-head c the said bolt is held in permanent engagement with the section A.
To open and close my improved form of lapring, the operation is as follows: To open the (N0 model.)
two sections for the insertion of any suitable attachment connection, the T-head a of the bolt a is turned in such manner as to cause an alignment thereof with the slot a and is pressed through said slot.- The two sections A and A are then turned away from each other, as shown in Fig. 3, when the insertion of the attachment connection may be readily accomplished. WVhen the two sections are closed, the T-head a of the bolt a is shoved through the slot u until the said head clears its outer opening, when it is then turned at right angles in the groove a, and thus secures the two sections together.
The engagement faces of each of the sections are of a flattened construction, whereby when the two sections are united a tighterjoint is formed, which tends to continue the curvature of the reverse faces and make the ring have a rounded appearance.
The novelty and utility of my improved lapring being obviously apparent and appreciable, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new is l. The combination, with the two pivoted sections A and A, constructed and arranged as set forth, andthesection A, having slot a, of the bolt a, having a head, a, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the two sections A and A, having reversely-arranged openings a, the stationary pivot-bolt a, and the bolt to in permanent connection with the section A, and having a head adapted to engagewith a slot in the section A, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the section A, of the section A, pivotally connected thereto, and having an elongated slot, a and a transverse groove, a, and the bolt a in section A, having a head, a", substantially as described.
