SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369.952, dated September 13, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZO O. MATTEsoN, a citizen of the United States,residing at WVatertown, in the county of J efi'erson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Balances; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of asash-weight embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inner side elevation of one of the weight-sections. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same sashweight, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is an edge View of a modified form of sash-weight, and Fig. 6 is an end view thereof. Fig. 7 is a detail section showing a portion of the sash-weight and the pulley, and illustrating the method of journaling the pulley in the Weight.
My invention relates to sash-balances.
The object of my improvement is to provide a sash-weight carrying a pulley over which the sash-cord passes, and which is capable of being inserted through the ordinary pocket in window-frames which are provided with sashbalances.
A further object is to make the weight in two parts, so as to inclose the sash-cord pulley within, whereby certain advantages accrue, all of which will be fully described in detail, and the points of novelty then set forth in the claim.

The two sections 1) c of the weight may be of equal size, dividing the weight through the center, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, or the contacting faces of the two halves may be cut in a diagonal line through the weight, as shown in the end view, Fig. 6, and edge View, Fig. 5, or in any other known way whereby access may be had to the opening k to remove the pulley d.
The pulley d may have comically-shaped cavities, within which the studs i 2' enter, Fig. 8; or pulley d may have the projections or studs i cast upon it, as shown in Fig. 7, anda bearing made for them in the sections b c.
The bolt e and the opening through the weight which receives it may be of any known construction.
There may be more or less number of lugs f and recesses y, if desirable, and they may be placed on other parts of the weight-sections.
The openings Z, through whichthe sash-cord passes, may be of different shapes. Figs. 4 and 6 illustrate two forms.
My improved sash-weight is designed more particularly in connection with that class of sash-balances which employ a single cord on either side to balance both sashes.
To apply my weight to the sash-cord, I first remove the bolt or key 6 and take apart the two sections 1) and c. The pulley d is then taken out and a loop of the sashcord h placed within the openings Z and receptacle k, the pulley replaced, and the two sections then rebolted together.
In my improved sash-weight, made in two parts and of the relative width and thickness shown, I am enabled to quickly adjust it upon the cord and insert it through the usually shaped pocket made in window-frames.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters In testimony whereof I affix my signature in Patent, ispresence of two witnesses.
