BROOM 0R MOP HOLDER.

5 vvu e 1-1 tot UNITED STATES PATENT @rrcn.
\VILLIAM CRAINE, OF BROOKFIELD, NEW YORK.
BROOM OR MOP HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,318, dated September 6, I 887.
Application filed March 9, 1887. Serial No. 230,980. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg] concern:
Be ithnown that I, \VTLLIAM ORAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broom or Mop Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved broom or mop holder for holding the broom or mop when not in use; and it consists in the peculiar features of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings referred to, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, showing a broom supported thereby; and Fig. 2 is a front clevation of the holder.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a base-plate of any desired size or form and provided with holes through which retaining screws or nails are passed to secure it in position on the wall or other support. This base-plate is also provided with the side arms, a, to which I pivotally secure the cams or segmental eccentrics B B, as clearly shown. These cams B B are each provided with a short projection or spur, Znwhioh extends outward from the pivotal point of the cam, and is adapted to serve as a handle when so desired. The inner ends or edges of these cams are each provided with a series of cog-teeth, b, which intermesh and thereby secure the simultaneous action of both cams. These inner ends or edges are curved, as will be readily understood, in the arcs of circles whose centers are the pivotal points of the respective cams. The cams are provided on their front faces with the curved ribs or flanges O, which are arranged just outside of the cog-teeth, and are corrugated on their inner faces or provided with upward.-
1y-projecting teeth 0, which in operation bite or bind against the handle of the mop or broom. These ribs or flanges O are so arranged that their upper ends are permitted to come closer together than their lower ends, the purpose of 5 which will presently appear.
In use the device is secured to the wall or other support, and the end of the broom-handle is pushed upward between the ribs or flanges O, forcing them upward and apart. WVhen the upward pressure on the broom is released, the cams will fall by their own weight and bind against the opposite sides of the broom-handle and thereby hold the same, and this action is rendered surer and more positive by the teeth a taking into the handle. It is also increased in efficiency by the upper ends of the ribs being allowed to come so nearly together, as the tendency of the broom to drop has the effect of drawing the cams downward and consequently causing the said ribs to bind more tightly against the broom-handle.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the broom can be released only by lifting it sulficiently to loosen the grip ofthe ribs and then withdrawing it from between the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A broom-holder comprisinga base-plate and a pair of sections pivoted to said base-plate and provided with curved ribs and intermeshing teeth, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CRATNE.
