Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR H. DOST, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DYEING BRUSH-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 368,880, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed July 6. 1886. Serial No. 207,290. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODOR H. Dos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fiber for Brushes and Process for Preparing Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved article of fiber for brushes and to a process for preparing the same.
The object of the-invention is to provide vegetable fiber suitable for the manufacture of brushes dyed in a fast color in imitation of horse-hair.
In carrying out my invention I take palma fiber or any other fiber which is suitable for the manufacture of brushes and dye it in an extract oflogwood or other dye which will produce a black color- The fiber is dyed in bulk or in mass, any convenient quantity. The dyed fiber is dried and then spread out on trays or'on the floor of a bleachery, where it is subjected to the action of the fumes of sulphur. The sulphur treatment of the dyed fiber has two desirable effects-first, to remove some of the dark color, and thereby make it.
'fiber by alternately exposing it to the air and subjecting it to the action of the sulphur. Fiber thus prepared resembles horse-hair and will not lose its color.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The process herein described of preparing fiber for brushes, the same consisting in dyeing suitable fiber in bulk or mass in extract of logwood or other dye producing a black color, then drying the same after being removed from the extract, and finally subjecting the fiber to the fumes of sulphur, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein the presence of two witnesses.
THEODOR H. DOST.
