STRAW-BURNING STOVE.

Bc it known that I, ALONZO EDWARD SMITH, of Frankfort, in the county of Spink and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Straw-Burning Stove, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to a stove adapted for burning straw'fuel, and has for its object to provide an inexpensive, cleanly, efficient, and easily-manageable stove of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the stove and its draft-flue connections, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures. Figure l is a front view of my improved straw-burning stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation thereof on the line y g/ of'Fig. l, and shows also a part of the smoke-pipe with which the stove-pipe connects and the chain used for lifting the stove-top prior to recharging the stove with fuel; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower part of the stove in horizontal section on the line :r x, Fig. 2.
The body or drum A of the stoveis made of sheet metal, and preferably in cylindrical form, and is open at the top, and is provided with a bottom plate, B, fixed to it preferably by afiange on the plate overlooking an outbent flange on the body. The bottom plate, B, rests loosely upon a base-plate, C, supported at suitable height upon legs D, and to the under side of the base-plate is fixed a casing, E, open at the front end, and in which is placed an ashpan, F, having a handle, f, allowing its easy withdrawal from beneath the stove-body.
In the bottom plate, B, ofthe stove is formed an opening, b, with which an opening, c, in the base-plate C registers, and over the opening'b is fitted, in suitable slideways, G G, fixed to the bottom plate, B, a damper, H, having a handle, h, passing out through a hole in the stove-body and adapted to be pulled or pushed for adjusting the damper to regulate the draft, as required. Handles I I are fixed to the opposite sides of the stovebody, and whereby it may be lifted and carried to a stack outdoors to be recharged with straw.
The stove has a cone-top, J, which has a fiange, j, extending down into and closely fitting the body A, and at its upper end the top J has a fixed smoke draft-pipe, K, fitted with an ordinary damper, k, and passing telescopically into a draft fine or pipe, L, which is shown only in part,and will be fixed in or to the ceiling or wall of a house and lead to a smoke-fine. The top J also has a couple of handles, M M, fixed to it, and whereby it may be lifted from the stove-body as its pipe K slides in the pipe L, and the top has an eye, N, with which a chain or rope, O, leading from an overhead pulley or support, will be connected to hold up the stove-top while the stove-body is being recharged with fuel, and when the lled stovebody is returned to place on the base, the top .I will be lowered onto the body after the straw fuel islighted at the top of the body, and by regulating the extent of opening ofthe lower and upper dampcrs, H k, the draft may be regulated to a nicety to control the combustion of the straw, as desired. After the straw is well ignited, both the darnpers may be closed, and one charging or filling of the stove will last from eight to fourteen hours, depending on the grade of straw fuel used. The straw burns away from the side walls of the stove drum or body and leaves a core or cone of live embers, which lasts a long time and throws out an intense heat.
The damper k will fit loosely in the pipe K, or will have one or more perforations allowing passage of products of combustion to the liuc L when the damper is closed across the pipe to maintain sufficient draft to prevent extinguishment of the fire.
At the sides of the drum A, near its top, a few holes, I), are made, and these holes may be closed or opened at will by manipulating ,dampers R, pivoted to the drum. The holes are to allow admission of air to the drum to dry the moisturethereinandpreventthe formation in the drum of creosote fluid by condensation from the straw fuel should it be wet or should the draft be imperfect.
This stove is specially adapted for use in 4grain-growing regions where coal fuelis scarce,
and in use it will be found more cleanly than soft-coal-burning stoves.
I am aware that a straw-burning stove has been made with a cylinder or body having a IOO 2 'eeefiee grated bottom and set over an ash-pit base, and that a separate feed-bucket adapted when lled to be placed into the stove-body to discharge its load of fresh fuel therein has been used; but this construction of stove and mode of feeding it are objectionable, in that burning fuel is liable to be Carried from the stove when feeding it and seattered'about the room, which is dangerous, While my stove-body, when the damper H is shut, has a closed or tight bottom and is provided with handles; hence the entire stovebody,when its top is lifted off, may be carried outdoors for replenishing the fuel Without danger of setting flre to the house, as sparks or live embers will not escape from it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A straw-burning stove consisting of a body or dru1n,A, open at the top, and having a bottom plate, B, provided with an opening,
b, a damper, H, fitted at said opening, a base, C, on which the body is supported loosely for removal, and provided with an opening, c, registering with the opening b, an ash-pan, F, f1tted to the' base C, a top, J, fitted to the body A and adapted for removal therefrom, and a pipe, K, fitted to the top, substantially as shown and described.
