2 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to looms, and more particularly to selvage forming devices employed in such looms.
The most advantageous use of the invention is in air jet looms, but it can be used in ordinary looms with equally good results.
Widely employed at the present time looms are selvage forming devices comprising an element located at one edge of the width of the fabric to be woven and holding the end of the weft thread beaten up by the reed, and a hook fixed on a swivel pin at the other edge of the fabric, with the hook entering the shed formed by the warp threads and retracting therefrom. The pin derives its swivelling movement into the shed and back therefrom from a complex eccentric-motion gear, and which catches the end of the beaten up wefi thread during its entry into the shed and lays such end in the shed during its retraction from the latter, in order to form the selvage.
The complex eccentric gear causes inconveniences in servicing the loom, and does not permit locating the selvage forming device sufficiently closely to the fabric. The device requires comparatively long weft ends, which correspondingly entail a very wide selvage. Such selvage is often cut away when cutting piece goods, since it cannot be let into the seam.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The basic object of the invention is to provide a selvage forming device with such a disposition of the suction tube that the device has a simple design, is convenient in servicing, and enable a selvage of fine quality to be formed.
With this object in view, in a selvage forming device comprising an element located at one edge of the width of the fabric to be woven, and'holding the end of a weft thread beaten up by a reed, and a hook-like suction tube fixed on a pin at the other edge of the fabric, with the hook entering a shed formed by warp threads and retracting therefrom catching the end of the beaten up weft thread during its entry into the shed, and laying such end in the shed during the retraction of suction tube from the shed, so as to form the selvage, the suction tube being, according to the invention, connected with a slay through a mechanism imparting the oscillating movement of the slay into a oscillating movement of the suction tube in a plane perpendicular to the movement of the slay into the shed and back therefrom.
Advantageously, the mechanism comprise a bracket affixed on the slay, and a drawbar, one end of the drawbar being through a universal joint, connected to the bracket, and the other end also being through a universal joint, attached to a single-arm lever rigidly fixed on the suction tube pin, with the pin being housed in a sleeve connected through a bar with a bracket mounted on the loom frame.
Such a construction of the selvage forming device simplifies its design and makes it possible to obtain a fabric selvage of fine quality.
The suction tube is and connected to the piping of an air system for developing a vacuum inside the suction tube for catching the end of the weft thread beaten up by the reed.
For a better appreciation of the invention, reference is made to a particular exemplary embodiment thereof in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Fig. l is a view in perspective of the selvage forming device according to the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary diagrammatic view illustrating the suction tube position at the moment of catching the end of the weft thread.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The selvage forming device comprises a hook-like suction tube 1 (Fig. I) located at the edge of the width of the fabric to be woven, and entering the shed formed by warp threads 2 and retracting therefrom. The hook is rigidly fixed on a pin 3, and is connected with a slay or batten 4 of the loom through a mechanism for imparting the oscillating movement of the slay (conventionally shown in the drawing by arrow A) into an oscillating movement of the section tube 1 in a plane perpendicular to the movement of the slay into the shed and back (the suction tube movement being conventionally shown by arrow B).
The mechanism comprises a bracket 5 fixed on the slay 4 and to which one end of a drawbar 7 is attached via a universal joint 6. The other end of the drawbar is, through a universal joint 8, connected to a single-arm lever 9, and the lever 9 is rigidly fixed on the pin 3 of the hook I. The pin 3 is housed in a sleeve 10 which, by means of a bar 1 l, is connected with a bracket 12 fixed on frame 13 of the loom. The length of the bar 11, and hence, the angle of turn of the pin 3, are adjusted by displacing the bar inside the bracket 12 and fixing the bar in position by a set bolt 14.
The hook I is flattened towards its middle portion, and has a scarf at its free end, to provide for favorable entry into, and movement in, the shed. The sleeve 10 is set atan angleato the bar 11.
When the present selvage forming device is to be used in air jet looms, the free end of the pin 3, which is hollow, is connected to a piping 15 of an air system capable of developing a vacuum inside the hook I for catching the end of a weft thread 16 already beaten up by a reed 17 a carried by the slay. The end of the weft thread 16 is caught during movement of the tube 1 into the shed, with such end being laid in the shed during the retraction of the hook I from the shed, and as a result of thereof, the selvage of fabric 18 is formed, as shown in FIG. 2.
The end of the laid weft thread 16 is held in position, before being laid in the shed by the suction tube 1, with the aid of an element in the form of a spongy material 19 secured on a fixed base 20 and located at the edge of the width of the fabric to be woven.
As shown in Fig. 2, the end of the weft thread 16 lies on the top surface of the spongy material 19. However, the material 16 may have the shape of a fork, and in this case, the end of the thread 16 is disposed free end of the between the ends of the fork, while the scarfed free end of the hook I also moves between the ends.
The selvage is formed as follows:
During the oscillating movement of the slay 4, the bracket 5 moves therewith and through the joints 6 and 8, the drawbar 7 and lever 9, and this oscillating movement is an oscillating imparted into movement of the pin 3 in a plane perpendicular to the movement of the slay. Hence, the suction tube 1 is oscillated to a certain angle. Each revolution of the loom shaft (not shown) will result in the suction tube 1 entering the shed and retracting therefrom. Angle a ensures a correct entry of the suction tube 1 into the shed, its required trajectory of movement in the shed, and its approach to the end of the weft thread 16. This end of the weft thread lies on the spongy material 19, since as the reed 17 beats up the weft thread, it presses such end to the material 19, thereby compressing the material to some extent. The scarfed free end of the suction tube 1 approaches and nearly touches the material, while the vacuum supplied through the piping 15, the hollow pin 3, and the suction tube 1 creates an intense suction at the scarfed free end of the suction tube due to which the end of the weft thread 16 is caught and drawn inside the suction tube 1. As the suction tube retracts from the shed, the drawn in end of the weft thread is laid therein. Since the suction tube 1 retracts from the shed during the rest position, ie at the time of forming a new shed, the laid end of the thread 16 is at once gripped by the warp threads 2 of the new shed, and is held by such thread. As the reed 17 beats a new weft thread, the end is beaten up together with the latter, thus being fixed in the fabric 18 and forming its selvage.
What is claimed is:
l. A selvage forming device for a loom having a slay mounted for oscillating movement and functioning to beat-up weft threads inserted into successive warp sheds, the end portions of the weft threads projecting beyond the edge of the outer warp threads of the fabric, the device comprising means adjacent at least one fabric edge for positioning the projecting end portions of the weft thread just beaten up, a rotatable pin positioned at an angle to the perpendicular to the plane of the fabric, a suction tube secured on said pin, for entering each shed formed by the warp threads and retracting therefrom, and a mechanism connecting the suction tube with the slay for imparting the oscillating movement of the slay into oscillating movement of the suction tube in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of movement of the slay, said mechanism including a bracket fixed to the slay, a draw bar, a first universal joint connecting one end of the draw bar to the bracket, a single arm lever rigidly fixed on the pin, a sleeve in which the pin is housed, a second stationarily mounted bracket, a second universal joint connecting the other end of the draw bar to the single arm lever, and a bar connecting the sleeve with the second bracket, the arrangement being such that as the suction tube approaches the end portion of the weft thread, the suction therein draws the end of the weft thread inside the suction tube and as the tube retracts from the shed, said end is deposited therein.
