ADOLF CONVERT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN CARBONATE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOP COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,073, dated August 9, 188?.
Application filed April 14, 1887.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF CONVERT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improveof which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is a stopcock whichcau be used with advantage for liquids or fluids under a very high -pressure-such, for instance, as liquid carbonic acid.
The peculiar and novel construction of my stop-cock is pointed out in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the plane a: m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the middle section of the shell of my stop-cock. B is the lower section of its top section. The lower section, B, isprovided with a screw-nipple, a, by means of which it can be connected to the fountain, which contains liquid carbonic acid, or any other fluid under ahigh pressure. Said lower section is provided at its top with a screw socket to engage with a screw-thread, b, at the lower end of the middle section, A, and said middle section is provided at its upper end with a screwsocket to engage with a screwthread, 0, at the lower end of the top section, C. The upper end of this top section forms a stuffing-box, (I, through which extends the screw-spindle D, the screw-thread of which engages with a female thread, 0, in the interior of the lower portion of the top section, (3..
E is thevalve-stem, which is provided at its upper end with a center point,f, to engage with a cavity, 9, in the inner end of the screw spindle, and on which is formed a flange, h, which rests in a screwcap, 13, the screw-thread of which engages with a screw thread, j, on the screw-spindle D, and which, when screwed up tight, bears against a flange, K, on said screw-spindle, allowing the valvestem E a certain freedom of motion. Said valve-stem carries two valves, lm, the valve Z'being situated above the delivery-channel a, while the valve m is situated below said delivery-channel.
In the interior of the middle section, A, of
shell are formed two valve-seats, 0 19- the said shell, and C is' Serial No. 234,790. (No model.)
onefor the valve Z and the other for the valve m..and the position of these valveseats is ,so adjusted that when the screw-spindle D is dle is turned ,up, the valve on closes and the valve Z opens. In order to facilitate theadj ustment of the valves, the valve-seats 01) are made of vulcanized rubber or other elastic material.
By providing the valve -stem with the flange h, located inside of the cap 1', which is screwed uponthe screw-spindle, a novel loose connection is provided between the stem carrying the two valves and the screwspindle, so that both valves Z on are enabled to adjust themselves in their seats, so as to close tight, which is of great importance in dealing with liquids or fluids under such a high pressure as ten hundred pounds to the square inch, such being the pressure under which liquid carbonic acid has to be kept in order to retain the same in its liquid form.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a stop -coek, of the upper and lower sections, B C, the middle section, A, having the delivery-channeln, and provided, respectively, above and below the channel with the valve-seats 0 p, and the spindle D, screw-threaded in the upper section and provided at its lower end with a screwthread, j, the screw-cap i, engaging the latter, and the valve-stem E, having atits upper end a flange, h, loosely confined between the screw-cap and the screw-spindle and provided with two valves, Zm, one arranged in the middle section above its valve-seat and the delivery-channel and the other arranged in the lower section below its valve-seat and the said delivery-channel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
