Abstract

A container is enclosed in a decorative sleeve. The latter is preferably made of fiberboard or the like, and is in the form of a cylinder slit longitudinally thereof. The I.D. of the sleeve is slightly smaller than the O.D. of the container, and the elasticity of the split sleeve causes the same to embrace the cylindrical sides of the container snugly. In cases where the container has a top closure smaller than the O.D. of the container, the decorative sleeve can extend above such top closure enabling the container and decorative sleeve to be stacked readily. The decorative sleeve lends itself readily to changes in graphics thereon, all to the end that it may be changed in accordance with market needs.

PROTECTIVE AND DECORATIVE SLEEVE CONTAINERS SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is an isometric view showing the combination of a container body and a protective and decorative sleeve all according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of a blank of paperboard or the like for forming the protective sleeve seen in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view to an enlarged scale, taken substantially along the plane indicated by the arrows 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a transverse section through the sleeve prior to the elastic deformation thereof in placing the same about a container body; and.
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4 showing the deformation taken by said sleeve.
SPECIFICATION The combination container and protective and decorative split sleeve according to the present invention is referred to generally by the reference numeral 10. The split sleeve is denoted by the reference character SS, and is formed from a rectangular blank B of fiberboard, paperboard or the like. Blank B has chamfered corners CI-I as seen in FIG. 2.
Blank B may be formed about a mandrel, not shown,
FOR
into the form of a split sleeve SS having abutting edges E as seen in FIG. 1. Split sleeve SS is adapted to enclose a cylindrical container C having dispenser top DT, container C. being shown in phantom outline within split sleeve SS.
As seen in FIG. 4, split sleeve SS, after being formed I about the mandrel, for example, has a certain amount inherent resiliency or elasticity causing the edges E to overlap. By reason of the resiliency of the split sleeve SS it is adapted to be placed over the cylindrical container C, and the resiliency is such as to cause the sleeve SS tightly to embrace the cylindrical sides of container C.
As seen in FIG. 1, split sleeve SS has an ID. conforming substantially to the CD. of container C, such that the edges E of split sleeve S are substantially in abutting relationship. The resiliency of sleeve SS enables it to embrace the cylindrical side of the container C quite tightly.
As seen in FIG. 5, the diameter of the container C may be such that the confronting edges E are spaced some small distance from each other, such additional deformation of the sleeve SS occurring when being placed about a container C of slightly larger diameter, thus enabling it to embrace the same even more tightly.
As seen in FIG. 1, the axial extent of the protective and decorative sleeve may be greater than the axial extent of the container C by making the container easily stackable for display at the point of sale. The decorative sleeve may have suitable graphics thereon accord ing to marketing programs or the like.
Iclaim: l. The combination of a container with a protective and decorative split sleeve therefor:
a. said container including a cylindrical body receivable within said sleeve;
b. said sleeve being formed from a blank of paperboard or the like,
i. and having an internal diameter which is less than the outside diameter of said cylindrical body;
c. whereby when said sleeve is placed about said cylindrical body said split sleeve is elastically strained diametrically to cause said split sleeve to be positioned tightly about said cylindrical body;
d. the axial extent of said split sleeve being greater than the axial extent of said container.

Claims (1)

1. The combination of a container with a protective and decorative split sleeve therefor: a. said container including a cylindrical body receivable within said sleeve; b. said sleeve being formed from a blank of paperboard or the like, i. and having an internal diameter which is less than the outside diameter of said cylindrical body; c. whereby when said sleeve is placed about said cylindrical body said split sleeve is elastically strained diametrically to cause said split sleeve to be positioned tightly about said cylindrical body; d. the axial extent of said split sleeve being greater than the axial extent of said container.
