Be it known that we,l NELSON S. BOWDIsH and EDWARD R. BowDIsH, citizensof the particularly to the details of construction,
whereby the cost of manufacture is reduced, as well as greater strength and longer service secured.
Heretoforein construction of boats the manner of connecting the keel, ribs, beams, and seats or thwarts has been such that these parts have been weakened at the points of connection, and places or pockets for the reception and retention of Water have been formed,
whereby the wooden portion has become water-soaked and eventually rotted.
In this invention the above disadvantages are overcome by a construction and relative arrangement of the parts and by the employment of peculiar metallic connecting devices, as hereinafter described. l
The novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed .out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figurel is a trans verse section of a portion of a boat sufficient in extent to illustrate our invention. Figs. 2 to 7 are details embodied in Fig. l, and hereinafter more fully described.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, A represents the keel, B the garboard, C the planking, D the ribs, E the beam, and F the deck, of aboat. Instead of extending the ribD com pletely to and in contact with the keel, as heretofore, we leave a space, A', between the end of the rib and the keel for the passage of water along the bottom of the boat, in order that all the water in the boat may have an unobstructed passage tothe lowest point in the bottom, where it may be'bailed or pumped out. This feature of construction prevents the re tention of water at an intersection of a rib with the keel and the subsequent rotting of the parts of the boat at these points. Now, in or der to secure a desired rigid connection ofthe rib with the keel, we employ a socket, G, which is adapted to receive or to be secured to the end of the rib by being provided with depending iianges G', which, in connection with the body portion of the socket, may embrace the entire rib, or, as in this instance, the top and sides of a rib, to which it is secured by a screw, bolt, or rivet, G2, passing through an aperture, G, formed in the socket. At the opposite end of the body portion G is another aperture, G4, for the passage of a bolt, rivet, or screw, G5, by which the socket is secured to the keel. The space A' not only provides a water-way, but also permits of the natural expansion and contraction of the keel and garboard and their adjacent timbers, caused by variations of temperature and moisture to which they are subjected.
H represents a connecting, supporting, and stiffening bracket which we employ at the j u nction of the rib and beam, and it consists of a substantially right-angular body portion having apertures I-l' for the passage of the bolts, rivets, or screws by which it is secured in position. It is also provided with marginal lugs H3, for embracing the sides of the rib and of the beam. IVhen in position and connected with these parts, (which, by the way, need not Vnecessarily be mortised and tenoned to ,each
t required, and this fact, in connection with the angular conformation of the bracket and the location at which it is applied, eonduces materially to the strength of the joint. The resistance offered by the beam at its end against the ribto an inward pressure is supplemented by that of the bolt or screw passing upwardly into the beam and by the extended surface of the depending portion of the bracket, and in the same manner weight or pressure upon the deck is supported by the bracket.

Having described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a boat, the combination, with the keel and a rib terminating, a dietanec from the k eel, of a metal clamp Secured at one end to the keel and at the other end embraeing` the rib, substantially as specified.
2. In a boat, the combination of a keel, a rib terminating a di stance from the keel, forming` a water-passage, and a clamp connecting the keel and rib, Substantially as Specified.
3. In a boat, the combination ol' a keel, a
waterpassage, and a casting Secured. to the top l of the rib and keel and embracing the sides of the rib, substantially as specified.
4i. The combination., with the rib and beam of a boat, of a casting conforming,` and bolted to their adjacent inner faces and, having lugs for embracing their opposite sides, substantially as specified.
5. In a boat, the combination of a rib and a Seat or thwart, and a casting interposed between the two and having` lugs to embrace the sides of the rib above and below the seat or thwart, and having arms projecting outwardly f rom the knee to embrace opposite sides of the seat or thwart, substantial] y as specified.
6. The combination ofthe eastinigr I, having rib-embracing lugs I and oppoSitely-disposed Seat-supporting brackets I, with a rib and a Seat arranged in the respective lugs, substantially as specified.
