No. 368,009. Patented Aug.- 9, v1887f UNITED STATES- i PATENT OFFICE.
cifiARLEs Ross, JR., OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BELT-SHIF'TER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 368,009, dated August 9, 1887.
` Application led April 26, 1887. Serial No. 236,188. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Ross, Jr.,a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings Vand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Shifters, of which the followingis aspecitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a side view of part of a paint-mixerprovided with my improvement.
` Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through p and the invention consists inthe peculiar con- .the vertical shaft ot' the paint-mixer.
ters the hole b.
struction, arrangement, and combinations of parts, hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the details of the drawings, which show the preferable plans of carrying out my improvement, A represents the shaft of an ordinarypaint-miXer run ning in suitable bearings, B B', and carry-ing'the bevel-gearO, meshing with a larger bevel-gearD, set on neath the bearing Bris a holder, L, cast or otherwise formed or attached to the'frame or standard, having asquare hole, b, adapted to receive a bar, E, which tits in said hole and is held vthere by a set-screw, F. This bar is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as bent upward at e and as having a yhorizontal arm,e, substantially at right angles to that part of bar E that en- On this arm e works a slide, G, preferably provided with a handle, g, and having on'its under side two holes which receive and hold the ends h of the belt guide or yoke H, which ends are securely fastened by means of the nuts l', screwed onto the ends h on each side of the slide G, and thus the yoke His rigidly held in said` slide G.
Near each end of the arm e is a pin,J, which lacts as a stop to prevent the slide G from travof the bar E passing into a hole forming part of the machine I use a separate holder, L, pro- `vided with holes Z, through which bolts may be passed to fasten the same to any machine desired.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it is evident that the form of the holder L may be varied to suit different machines; nor do I limit myself to a square bar, (although l prefer it,) as it is obvious that bars of other forms may be used-as, for instance, a iiat bar or a round bar provided with somelmeans for preventing the slide from vturning thereon.
I prefer to make two sets of holes I in the arm e' at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 3, (one set being shown in dotted lines,) in order that the shifter may be more readily adapted to different machines; but this is not necessary where it is designed for some special machine, as one set of holes is all that is re-j quired.
The key will prevent the creeping of the belt on the tight pulley and the starting of the machine, which frequently occurs with the old style of shifter, tothe great dangerof the operator.
Instead of the key a setscrew may be used, or a spring-catch that the operator may draw out of a notch on the arm e as he places his hand on the handle g.
It will be seen that the bar E may be pushed in or out of the holder as desired, and secured by the set-screw to allow larger or smaller pulleys being used, as required, or to suit the angle on which the belt runs. Further adjustments may be had by bending theY bar E at different angles or by transposing the slide on the bar, so as to bring the guide or yoke H above or below or on opposite sides of the arm e; or the guide itself may be bent at different angles to'suit circumstances. It will -I OO also be seen from the foregoing that my inhar E, bent substantially ab right angles and vention makes a very convenient belt-shifter', having one arm adjustable in said holder, Subwhieh can be sold as an article of manufacstantially as and foi` the purpose specified. ture, as it is readily adapted to any machine, In testimony whereof Iafix my signature, in
5 whether new or old, and one tl1at,wl1ile compresenee of two witnesses, this 25th (lay of 15 paratiively cheap, will be very durable and April, 1387.
not likely to geb ont of order. CHARLES ROSS, JR.
Vhat I claim as new isfitnessesz The combination, in a belt-shifter, of the GEO. S. STODDART,
1o slide G, the belt-guide H, theholderL, and the HIRAM WILLIAMS.
