ROAD DIIGGER, AND SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,968, dated August 9, 1887.
Applicationfiled August 18, 1886. Serial No. 211,199. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ALBERTO FINKS,Of New Berlin, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Road Digger and Scraper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact defrom the ground, as desired.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification,
.in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts" in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sideelevation of my combined digger and scraper. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section looking toward the rear, and Fig. 3 is a plan View with levers removed. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the diggerteeth.
The wagon adapted to be used in connection with my combined digger and grader is formed with the front axle, A, shorter than the rear axle, A, and the said axles are connected by beams B B, which extend in a V shape, suitably braced from front to rear, being supported above said axles by blocks 0 (J. Supports D D are attached to the inner side of the beams B B to extend a distance downward therefrom, consisting of two spaced vertical beams 1 and a transverse connecting beam, 2, the one support D being attached to the wagoubeam B about the center thereof between the axles,while the other support, D, is attached to the opposite wagon-. beam B about one-half its length nearer the front axle,
rear braces, 3 and 4, which extend one across the other from the transverse beams 2 of said supports to a connection with the wagonbeams B and B opposite each support, as shown in Fig. 2. Each support D D is provided with two metal guide-staples,-d d and d d, secured to the inner faceof the transverse connecting-beams 2 thereof, the space between said guides being regulated by the distance intervening between the digger and scraper bars, hereinafter described. Two more metal guide-staples, b b and If D are secured to the wagon-beams B B between the vertical beams 1 of the supports D D on the same plane with the above-mentioned lower guide staples, d d and (Z d.
The digger-bar E, arranged at an angle across the wagon-frame, between the wheels thereof, nearer the front than therear, is pro vided with vertical bars 6 0, one upon each side of the center, securely attached thereto, which, passing through guards e eflprojecting from the top of the digger-bar E, extend upward, the vertical bar a through the guidestaple (Z of the support D and the staple b of the wagon-beam B, the opposite vertical bar, 0, through the staple d of the support D and the staple btof the wagon-beam B. The object of the bars 0 and 6' thus held is to guide v the digger-bar E when elevated at either end, or bodily from the ground, which operation is accomplished by means of the verticalhoistrods 5 and 6, connected at one end to the eyebolts 7, secured in the top of the digger-bar E upon each side of the vertical guide-bars e e, and at the other to long levers S,fulcru.med on short standrods 9, extending above the wagon-beams B and B, the said levers being provided with spring actuated pawls 10, adapted to engage the racked standards 11.
The said pawls are operated in conjunction with the long levers S,as the digger-bar is ele vated thereby,through the pitman-rods 12 and short levers 13,pivoted to the handle ofthe long levers 8, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The one lever, operating through the hoist-rod 5,is situated upon the wagon-beam B, that operating hoist-rod 6 upon -wagon-beam B, their relative position upon the said wagon-beam being substantially the same as the supports D D.
Teeth F, made long, pointed, and slender,are
adapted to be secured to the side of the digger-bar E, facing toward the front wheels by means of short recessed plates f, bolted to the said digger-bar E over the teeth. As an ad ditional security, a screw is usually entered through the plates and teeth into the bar E. Behind each tooth F, and bearing against the same a distance toward the end of said teeth, is attached a supporti ng-block, f, purposed to impart additional strength to the slender teeth F and prevent the same from springing or yielding to the rear.
To overcome any side motion of the diggerhar E, Ifasten over the top of the wagonbeams B B, at an angle across the front axle, in a parallel line with the digger-bar, a stout brace-beam, G, to which the said diggerbar E is connected and held up to its work by brace-rods 1 attached to the said digger-bar E and bracebeam G near their ends through eyeholts g g, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Parallel with the digger-bar E, and at a moderate distance to the rear thereof, a scraperbar, H, is suspended and operated by means of hoistrods 14. 15,attaehed to the upper edge thereof through eyebolts 16, which rods are attached to long levers 17, fulcru med in standards 18, provided with spring-actuated pawls 19, to operatein connect-ion with racked standards 20, together with pitmen 21 and attached short levers 22. The device just described to operate the scraper-bar at either end or bodily, as desired, is a duplicate of the device heretofore mentioned as employed in vertically adjusting the digger-bar E, the standards 18 and 20 being secured to the beams 13 and B to the rear of the standards 1 and 9 upon the wagon-beam.
The scraper-bar is provided with upwardlyextending guide-rods h 7!, similar to and parallel with the guiderods c c of the digger-bar, which, passing through guards 7i hflprojecting from the top of said scraper-bar, extend upward. the vertical bar It through the lower and upper aligned staples, (Z and b, respectively situated upon the transverse bar 2 of the support D, and the wagon-beam B and the vertical bar It through the opposite lower and upper al igned guide-staples, d and If, respectively situated upon the transverse bar 2 of the sup port D, and the wagon-beam B performing the same function for the scraper-bar H as the aforesaid vertical bars 0 and e do for the diggcr-barE.
The scraper-bar H is provided with a blade, H, having its eutting-edgc concaved the length of said blade, the concavity thereof conforming to the standard convexity of ordinary roads, and the end which is parallel with the end of the digger-bar E, adapted to take the gutter side of the road, is formed with a sharp cutting-edge, K, to enter the ground readily and form the road at this point. The extended portion of the blade, which extends nearly to or over the crown of the road, is provided with a taper, K, to save metal and weight,as heavy work is not requi red at this point. The scraperbar H. is held securelyin position by means of brace-rods M, which are fastened at one end to the seraper-bar H and at the other to a bracebcam, M, said. beam. being placed at an angle over the top of the wagon-beams B B, to the rear of the digger brace-beam G, parallel therewith and with the scraper-bar. The bracerods M, thus connected with the scraper bar, prevent any side motion of the same.
The use of a concave bar on a road saves much time in working, covering nearly twice the space attainable by a straight blade, and at times the use of the digger may be dispensed with, as the concavity of the blade and its sharp end enables the scraper to form anew the road-surface, if not badly torn. Again, the concave blade will carry the refuse from the center of the road to the ditch,which cannot be done with a straight blade. \Vith the light tapering point the blade can be extended to cover a large portion of the road at once.
As will be seen from the drawings and description, the digger-bar and the scrapeubar are controlled byindependent levers at each end, or can be elevated equally their length. This greatly facilitates working downhill or on roads where a great convexity or crown is employed.
The draft is applied directly to the kingbolt, and, when the wagon is constructed, as shown, with short axles in front, is brought near the horses, and as the draft is entirely from the forward end the rear wheels remain at all times upon the ground,preventing the wagon fronrmoving sidewise out of the line of draft, which would not be the case were the draft partly from the rear. Vhen de sired, ordinary sod-cutters may be substituted, partly or entirely, for the diggertceth.
In the operation of my combined digger and grader, the diggers or sod-cutters, after being adj usted by means of their lovers to the nature of the road, as the team advances turn the same up, and as the bar is ordinarily elevated at the side nearest the crown the diggers will work deepest near the ditch, and gradually cease digging near the center. The scraper, fol lowing immediately behind,with its concavededge blade and sharp point quickly and handsomely forms the contour of the road in a short space of time. Any ordinary wagonframe may be used instead of the form shown. The latter is, however, preferable.
The digger-bar and teeth may be used independent] y of the scraper. For instance, in working downhill the pulverizing can be done upon both sides of the road by the digger, and then covered by the scraper.
Vhen the ground is very hard it is permissible in my construction of diggerbar to use the end teeth only in starting a break. This is accomplished by simply elevating the bar to its greatest height upon one side. The remainder of the work is thus made easier for either bar, and the labor divided according to the strength of the team employed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a road digger and scraper, the combination, with a wagon-frame having ascraperbar suspended therefrom, substantially as described, of a scraper-blade having its edge concaved the length thereof, provided with an angular point at one end and a gradual taper at the other, substantially as herein set forth, and for the purposes described.
2. In aroad digger and scraper, the combiof a digger-bar, E, provided with guards e and vertical guide-rods e 6, having teeth F attached thereto by the recessed plates f and supported thereon by the supporting-blocks f, together with devices for adjusting the ends of said bar independently of each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a road digger and scraper, the combisupports D D and guide-staples b d and b 11 of a scraper-bar, H, provided with guards 7L2, vertical guide-rods h h, and a scraper-blade,
and provided with an angular end, K, and a tapering extended end, K, together with devices for adjusting the ends of said bar independently of each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a road digger and scraper, the combination, with a wagon provided with beams G and M, arranged parallel and at an angle across the top of said frame with a space between, of the digger-bar E and scraper-bar H, supported in said frame, substantially as described, and the brace-rods g and M, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
