SCRAPER AND GRADER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,936, dated May 12, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LSTEPHANDOMBROFSZKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roslyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers and Graders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to devices for grading and scraping roads and similar places; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and one which is also comparatively inexpensive.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved road scraper and grader; Fig. 2,asidc view thereof, and Fig. 3 a rear end view.

In the practice of my invention I provide a grader or scraper which consists of two side bars A, which are united by cross-bars to form the frame, and the side bars at their rear ends are continued outwardly and upwardly and bent downwardly at ato form handles. The side bars A are also provided near the rear ends thereof with legs D, which are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 3, and secured thereto are plates or bars E, which overlap the side bars A, as shown at E and the lower ends of the plates or side barsE are connected bya cross-plate F, which is held at an inclination to said side bars or plates, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the front edge of the cross-plate F is provided with a cutting edge, and connected with the lower sides of the side bars A are braces G, which are secured to the legs D in order to give strength thereto, and which are carried out over the forward ends of the side bars to form loops or rings 9, by means of which a horse or horses maybe hitched to the grader or scraper.

Pivotally connected with the forward ends of the side bars A are vertical standards K, the lower ends of which are connected by a shaft 7;, on which is mounted a wheel L, the hub of said wheel being substantially as long as said shaft, as shown at L and connected with the upper ends of the standards K are side rods or braces M, which are united at m to form a rod or bar m which extends centrally of the frame and rests upon the crossbars B, and the outer end of which is provided with a head 0, and formed therein at regular intervals are eyes or apertures P, and secured to or formed 011 the outer or rear cross-bar B is a pin or projection R, which is adapted to be inserted through said eyes or apertures, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and The vertical standards K, by which the wheel L is supported, are adapted to be swung backwardly by the rod m and this operation will, as will be understood, raise the wheel L, and thus increase the inclination of the plate or blade F, which constitutes the grader or scraper proper, and it will be understood that in the operation of the device the wheel L rests upon the ground and supports the forward end thereof, and the farther this wheel is raised the greater will be the inclination of the plate or blade F, and by means of this arrangement this blade or plate may be caused to cut as deeply as desired, and it will be understood that pressure is applied thereto by the handles a, and this last operation is the same whenever the device is in operation whether the wheel L be held at its highest or at its lowest position. I may also arrange the blade or plate F so that it will extend diagonally across the frame, if desired, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

My improved scraper and grader is simple in construction and operation and is comparatively inexpensive, while being also well adapted to accomplish theresult for which it is intended.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Theherein-described scraper and grader which consists of a frame, the forward end of which is provided with a wheel which is supported between vertical bars which are pivotally connected with the frame, and the upper ends of which are connected with a yoke which extends backwardly, and which is provided with a rod by which the wheel may be raised or lowered ,and said frame being also provided at or near its rear end with a plate or blade which is suspended therefrom, and crosswise thereof, and which is held at an inclination thereto, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described scraper and grader which consists of a frame which comprises two side bars, a wheel suspended between the forward ends thereof, by means of a frame pivotally connected therewith, said side bars being provided with handles at their rear ends, and said frame by which the wheel is suspended, being provided with a rod by which the wheel may be raised or lowered, and said frame being also provided near its rear end with legs, or supports, and with a plate or blade which is suspended therefrom, and transversely thereof, and which is adapted to serve as a scraper, substantially as shown and described.

The herein-described scraper or grader,

which comprises the side bars as A, which are provided with handles, at their rear ends, a wheel pivotally supported between the forward ends of said side bars by means of vertical bars which are pivotally connected therewith, a yoke by which the upward ends of said vertical bars, are connected, a rod connected with said yoke, and extending backwardly, and provided with means for operatin g the same, to raise or lower the wheel, said frame being also provided near its rear end with a plate or blade which is suspended therefrom, and transversely thereof, and which is held at an inclination thereto, substantially as shown and described.
