To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AMEs YATEs EGAN, of Toronto, in the county of York and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Im-.

proverneiits in Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trusses, by means of which pressure is removed from the hip-muscles at the back of the wearer,a lateral draft is obtained, thereby causing a direct pressure I 5 on the pad,slipping down on the hip of the belt is avoided,and which conforms to the shape of '2 5 said view being taken from the front. In the accompanying drawings, whichform a part of this specification, A represents the 3c body-belt proper, having suitable straps, B and O, and buckles or clasps D, by means of which to adjust the device to and secure it around the body of the wearer.

E is the back plate, made preferably of 5 spring sheet metal, with each of its two ends bent outwardlyat an obtuse angle, as shown, and having at or near the bend a slot, a,through which the body-belt A is so passed as to rest against the inner face of the flat portion of the- 40' plate, while the belt passes outwardly and over the raised ends of the plate to relieve the pressure upon the rear hip-musc1es when the belt is drawn around the body of the patient.

F is the front plate, having two or more series of perforations, 1), extending laterally across the plate, and the ends of this plate are bent outwardly at an obtuse angle, and-at or near the bend are cut slots 0, through one of which, from the rear side,'is passedthe-strap B, which is then led back to its buckle or clasp and secured; Through the other end, from the rearward, is also passedthe strap 0, which is then led back over the end to its buckle to adjust the same around the body of the wearer.

Y G is a spring-pad of a type well known in the market, and d is a set-screw adapted to pass through any one of the perforations in the front plate, as may be desired or as may be necessary, and into the front plate orportion of the spring-pad, forthe purpose of securing such pad to the rear side of the plate.

His a lever having a slot, 0, therein adapted to engage with the head of the set-screw; and the lower end of this lever is provided with a button, h, or other analogous device, by means of which the strap I, having suitable perforations therefor, is engaged with such button. The, other end of this strap is looped over the body-belt, as shown, and is designed to pass from such body-belt in the rear of the hip, 7e downwardly on the interior of the hip, up to the front, and then engage with the button h on the lever H. In order to secure a perfect adjustment and bearing of the pad G on the rupture or hernia, 7 5 the pad is secured to its proper position by meansof its set-screw and engagement with any of the perforations or holes in such front plate, and the straps, being drawn up or socured around the body, hold the same in place. Now, the thigh-strap I is brought into play, and in order to secure an upward as well as an inward pressure of the pad, such strap is engaged with the lower end of the lever II at such tension as to produce the desired result. 8 5

By means of the back plate in its peculiar conformation lifting at its ends the belt from contact with the body, and the front plate having similar ends and performing a similar function in this regard, the pressure upon, the mus- 9o cles of the hip is entirely removed and brought to bear directly upon the hernia through the in tervention of the pad and upon the back at a point where the back plate becomes a support, and the adjustments provided enable the 5 wearer to adjust not only the tension of the pressure, but the direction of such pressure, as the circumstances of the case may require.
