CAR-COUPLlNG.
@PECIFICATON forming part o Letters Patent No. 367,613, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed November 1F86. Serial No. Sigi-Ul. (Nomndel.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. Fox,a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Coupling, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ear-coupling by means of which the ears may be readily connected and by which they may also be readily disconnected in an v position, even it not in line with each other.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a bottom view ot' the adjoining ends of a pair of cars 'provided with myimproved coupling, showing one ofthe couplings in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the coupling. Fig. 3 is a top view thereof', showing it open; Fig. et, a front view ofthe draw-head.
The letter a represents a hollow or tubular drawbar terminating in a rod, b, which is attached at its rear end to the bottom ot' the car A, in well-known manner, within a casing, c, so that the d raw-bar has a slight lateral play. The forward end ol' the tubular draw-bar a is slotted horizontally to forni two cheekpieees, d, between which there is pivoted the shank e of the hook or draw-head,]" by pivot-pin g.-
fithin draw-bar c there slides the bolt l1, surrounded by spiral spring yi and connected by chain j, passing overa pulley, k, pivoted to draw-bar a, and over pulleys 7.1' k'Hto a halid- 55 lever, o, pivoted to the car-platform. The
forward end of the spring-bolt h engages a slot or perforation, e", in rear end l' shank e.
'hen the spring-bolt is withdrawn, the head f will be unlocked and may turn on pivot y.
Zis a spring that tends to throw one head f into engagement with the adjoining head. rlhe face of each headf is recessed, as shown at m,
to receive theusual car-eoupling link, in case only one ofthe cars to be coupled is provided with my improved coupling. The link introduced into'recess my isheld in place by a pin, that may beintrodueed through an aperture, n, made in the end of head f, and opening` into recess m at right angles thereto.
W'hen it is desired to uncouplea pair of ears 0 provided with my improved coupling, one or both of the spring-bolts 7L are withdrawn by lever o to permit the heads f to become disengaged. 1t will be seen that even if the cars are not in line with each other the springbolts may always be readily withdrawn. The cars may be re-eoupled before or alter the heads f are locked to the draw-bars.
rlhe forward end of bolt h is beveled, as shown at L, and the rear edge of shank e is beveled, Vas shown at e. Then the head f is to be locked to the draw-bar u and is swung on pivot g. the bolt h will be crowded back by bevels e h to permit the passage of the shank e between cheeks d.
l. The combination of tubular draw-bar a, having cheek-pieces d, with the hook-shaped draw-head f, having slotted shank c, pivoted to said cheek-pieces, and havingbeveled edge 7c e',and with springbolt h, sliding within drawbar a and having beveled edge hf, substantiallyr as set forth.
2. The combination of tubular draw-bar a, having cheek-pieces d, with the drawhead f, 7 5 having slotted and beveled shank e, pivoted to said chcekpieecs, and with the spring-bolt h, having beveled edge li', and with the spring Z, pulleys k 7.1' It", chainj, and lever 0, substantially as described.
FRANK AfFOX.
