Description
V Jmonems. I MACHINE FOR SEWING WITH A RUNNING STITCH. No. 3,672. I Patented July 22, 1844.
Wz'insses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES RODGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 3,672, datedJuly 22, 1844.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES RODGERS, of the city, county, and.State of New York, watch and clock maker, have invented anew and useful Improvement on the Patent Machine for SewingOloth with a-Running Stitch; and I do hereby declare that the following description, and drawings attached hereunto and making a part of this specification,'is a full, clear, and exact illustration of the construction and operation of the same.
The machine consists of a wheel, part of which is shown on the drawing in Figure 1, (marked A,) having teeth on its outside edge of the form shown. I This wheel, and also all the other wheels of the machine, have in their edges grooves of the form shown at 1 in Fig. 3 in the wheel G. When the driving-wheel A is moved in the direction of the arrow 2, it turns the wheels F and B, and the cloth being entered at 3 carries it along and passes the needle first through one side and then the other, at spaces according to size of the teeth, and up the bend of the needle, at the same time giving motion to the wheel 0 continues the operation to the wheel D, the combined motion of which delivers the cloth off the needle. Thread being previously applied in the eye of the needle E, the cloth is delivered sewed at one operatioin The wheels F, B, O, and D turn on adjustable shafts that can be moved T to suit the thickness of the cloth by means of the nuts on the opposite endof the shaft to the wheel, as shown in Fig. 2, byNos. 1, 2, 3,
sewing cloth by machinery with'a running stitch; but
,What 'I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the wheels A, B, 0, and D, in combination with the needle having but two bends, which allows the machine to work much better, being more simple in its construction, and thereby having five wheels less than the original machine, the advantages of my arrangement being, first, that the needle, having but two bends, is not so liable to break; second, one wheel less that the cloth does not pass under; and, third, the doing away with four wheels which gear into one another on the back of the machine.
In witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand :and seal, in the cityof New York, this 19th day of March, A. D. 1844,
JAMES RODGERS. [L. 5.]
